I feel like a kid at Christmas time, only two more sleeps till a 10 day Moose and Mule Deer hunt......... Camper is on the truck, ATV in the trailer, guns all sighted in and ready to go, all that's left to do is groceries and load my cloths and such into the camper. Only going about 90 kms from home, but it's still going to be awesome to spend those 10 days in the bush. I'm going to take a bunch of pics, so I'll post a few when I return.

Grant,
When (not if) you get a moose, are you generally able to get a vehicle near it or will you have to 1/4 it and haul it out on your back?

Usually we have to quarter the moose and haul it out on the ATV or on our backs. Sometimes we do get them in a cut block with a road into it that we can get a vehicle into, but for the most part it's a cut and haul job.
PS: Thanx for the "When"........

So what kinda Steaks ya want?
Maybe Moose, or maybe Mule Deer?
Cause I got one of each on my shortened hunting trip. Shortened because we tagged out in the area we were hunting and would have to had move camp for the second time. Plus the temperature was getting quite warm during the day so the meat had to come into town and go to the butcher shop. Pics and stories to follow, I have way too much cleaning up to do to stay online long.

Started out Sunday morning. After a couple of days of not seeing anything.........that's right........anything, we decided to see if we could find a small lake that was about 8 kms from camp. I had it on good authority that the lake was a great spot for moose. After bouncing in and out of a couple of raunchy roads trying to find the lake, we decided to head up on a ridge to try and see it. As we made our way up, this big fellow started out across a cut block at about 10:30 am. I fired first at what I thought was about 350 yards, the Bull went down like a sack of potatoes. As my huntin buddy and I started to congratulate each other, rookie mistake I might add, the bull got up and made for the tree line. Both of us fired at him once before he made the trees. Then the tracking began. We could hear him moving through the think timber, but couldn't see him. We decided to wait for him to go down and not pressure him, so my buddy went back to camp to get his wife and more equipment we needed to get him out when we found him.
After about 45 min, I went in to the trees and found the blood trail. Shortly after that my partner and his wife showed up and the search was on. After following the blood trail for a few hundred yards, we lost it. As we search around for it, my buddies wife spotted the Moose, still up and now moving. I stayed still and listened to what was happening. My buddy was moving to the right, and I heard the moose moving to the left. I tried to cut it off, but it was doing a loop around us. I spotted him several times, but had no shot. He disappeared over a small ridge and I thought he might be gone for good. I moved up the ridge and as I topped it, standing 40 yards away and broadside in a little gully was the big bull. I made no mistake this time and dropped him.
It took another 9 hours to get the bull out of the bush. We had to build a road just to get close enough to hook onto him and get him out.
A little bit of "buck fever" must have taken over and I had misjudged the distance of my first shot and had actually broken his upper leg instead of taking him in the hump. First time I've ever done that and it just shows that anyone can get overanxious. A mistake I will try very hard not to ever make again.
