Iran decried the “extremist government” of Prime Minister Stephen Harper on Friday after Ottawa severed all diplomatic ties with Tehran over its support for the Syrian regime, rogue nuclear program and threats against Israel.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparst accused Canada of having a “radical foreign policy” that put the interests of Israel ahead of those of Canadians, reported Radio Farda, the Farsi-language version of Radio Free Europe.
The Iranian embassy in Ottawa also took a parting shot at the government, announcing in Farsi on its website that it had shut down due to Canada’s “hostile decision” and “cannot conduct any services for its dear countrymen.”
Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird said in a statement that Canada had closed its embassy in Tehran and that all remaining Iranian diplomatic personnel in Canada had been declared personae non gratae.
“Diplomatic relations between Canada and Iran have been suspended. All Canadian diplomatic staff have left Iran, and Iranian diplomats in Ottawa have been instructed to leave within five days,” Minister Baird said.
Canada has also designated Iran as a state sponsor of terrorism. The designation lifts Iran’s state immunity, opening the door for victims of Iranian state-sponsored terrorism to sue Tehran for damages.
A message posted on the Iranian embassy’s website claimed it had been forced to close because of the ‘hostile’ actions of the Canadian government: “Due to the hostile (belligerent) decision taken by the Canadian government, the embassy of the Islamic republic of Iran is now closed and we are unable to provide further consular service to our dear Iranian nationals. Please refrain from sending any documents to the consular services,” the note in Farsi read.
Relations between Canada and Iran have been sour since the 1979 Islamic Revolution but have worsened in recent years as Ottawa has confronted Tehran over its support for terrorism, nuclear ambitions, anti-Israeli rhetoric and human rights abuses. |
Time for a drink!

Ohh this has sparked protest in Ottawa.

A group of Iranian-Canadians is demonstrating outside the Department of Foreign Affairs — but their message is one of gratitude.
About three dozen members of different advocacy groups are waving placards with thank-you messages directed towards Stephen Harper's Conservative government.
They're happy with last week's surprising move by Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird to close the Canadian embassy in Iran and send Iranian diplomats in Canada home.
Some say operatives connected with the Iranian embassy had intimidated them, and harassed family members still living in their home country.
The demonstrators say there was no longer any point in the Canadian government trying to communicate with the Iranian regime. |
Mind you, I wonder if anyone else sees the irony that Canada's only gay Cabinet minister booted them from the country?

Elvis, you also have some sausages hanging on the inside mirror of your car? Here it's becoming a habit for some people. It is said that it's nice to have a dry sausage nearby whenever you like to eat one and on the other hand they prevent the car from being stolen...
