Very Happy Don't mean to but-in here;Suz-they make scotch brite in many dift grits-stuff is great, and they make it to go on a velcro type sanding disk that goes to a 4"-"side grinder"like welders use.The pads and velcro wheel can be found at most autobody type stores or welding supply stores.Be sure to hold onto your moneypurse-as they are usually "quite proud"of them! They really do make short work of finishing metal ,and for smoothing wood also!I have made short work of a couple of indignant gunstocks, and many metals with scotchbrite pads, and metals like;carbon steel, stainless steel,aluminum,copper,brass,bronze,TITANIUM,glass,plastic,etc.-The stuff is amazing!

Yeah I've seen those, was wondering if they'd be good on wood or just load up on dust too quickly. Might check that out when i start doin the forestock. I left a lot of wood on there to remove. Will start with the bandsaw and just make a taper from the muzzel end to the receiver end and see how that looks.

I took the crescent butt pad to work today and did a great job on it with a sanding disk then some wet pumice and a buffing wheel. Not a mirror shine but dang close. Now I have to drill two holes in it to mount it....don't want to...it's too pretty. Think I'll leave it in the white.

Progress is painful it's so dang hot in the garage/shop. I got most of the rifle together and the wood needs a finish put on. Sent my breech block to NMex to have a guy bush it and after a month of it sittin there I called about it and he says it's fine the way it is, no use spending money on it. Took me a month to find that out? Saved me $65 or so. A guy in Nevada is sending me a cross bolt and escutcheon and a new fore end tip. When I get all that together I can put a finish on it. I've used Devcon bedding epoxy to not only bed the action and barrel but also to fill in areas where my wood to metal fit wasn't up to par. I wish I could have done better but may be the good looks of the gun will overwhelm the patch job/fit and finish.... I'm not bummed, I really like the looks of it and the finish will bring out the myrtle wood figure, it's really more Remington looking than the original military stock was.

It sure looks good! I even blew it up to the original size and it still looks great!

Suz, I told my wife I was going to marry you - so you could restock some of my guns. She didn't think you would go for it...

Wanna make a bet she fashions the dust into a switch.

Nice work Suz, slow and steady by hand is the way to go, one slip with a power tool and we'd all learn a few new words

Which stock finish are you planning to use?

Don't know about finish just yet, have to look over my on-hand stash first. Probably like a dull varathane or flat polyurethane, if I thin them out and apply a few coats, that should turn out nice and be tough too. I've used marine varnish before and had good results with a UV inhibitor but it takes a lot of coats and a lot of sanding (expensive too).

Still waiting for my parts to arrive, then I have to do a bit of carving to apply the forend tip, and do some more final sanding. It's slightly cooler now in the garage, have some residual smoke from the fires in California and southern Oregon. Might wanna retreat to the coast this weekend to escape for better temps for a change. I don't remember a summer here with so many 90+ degree days. My apples are ripening sooner than expected and my grapes are turning color, tomatoes loving it, potatoes are waist high and blooming is already past. Gotta lot of work to do around here.

Suz
Thanks for the nice comments!!!

Suz...Try this on a sample piece of Myrtle. Apply a thin coat of Varathane and immediately wipe it off with a lint free cloth. Let dry.

I finally got around to takin a photo of the finished stocks. I just can't get very close with my camera. I had to to the fore-stock over (a huge nasty undertaking) but I just couldn't live with the first one. The newer fore-stock is much better fitting and no need to cheat with bedding compound. Very pleased with it and I actually got it to shoot after reforming some 45-90 brass which has the perfect headspacing and length. I've run some home cast lead through it and now all I need is more brass (a little over a buck a piece).

I did as you said Bushy, a light coat of thinned varathane and then two coats of full strength, sanding between coats. It feels nice and it's a semi-gloss so it doesn't shine you to death, I hate shiny wood, it looks plastic to me.

Making the stocks was harder than I thought it would be but now I wouldn't hesitate to make another. Once you learn how to do the hard parts the rest is not so bad (not easy but not so bad). My neighbor across the street wants me to help him make a new stock for a 22 rimfire he has using cherry. We're buddies now after I scrounged some pistol brass for him.

Beautiful work, Suz! You got yours finished before I did and I had a head start. It looks great, congrats.
