Coyote Hunter, excuse my ignorance, but what is a come-along? Never heard of anything like that.

I have no doubt I know it by another name though.

Thanks guys, now I'm on net. As Daveyboy says, it is a winch. Infact it is very similar to a "fence strainer" used to tension fencing wire. We have something similar over here called a Terfer Winch. Will search out a pic of one and post it.

Another "tool" most 4WD carry is a Snatch Strap. It is a very heavy nylon strap about 5 - 6 yds long and about 3" wide. Attach to the back of the towing vehicle and to the front of the trapped vehicle then go for it. The strap has a certain amount of stretch. This stretch adds to the mechanical ability of the towing vehicle.....pulls a bogged or stuck vehicle out easily.

Recovery Gear

Yes a come-a-long is a portable hand powered winch. Its just a lot easier to say come-a-long. Over here when someone talks about a winch they are usually talking about a electric,hydraulic,or PTO driven winch. I carry a come-along in my Jeep and have a Warn 8000 pound electric winch mounted on front.Both can come in mighty handy when traveling alone in dicey situations.

With the Come-a-long you need a good anchor when there are no trees, boulders, or a tow vehicle to tie off to. You surely need a shovel and a spare tire to bury for an anchor point.
I have a good Come-a-long in my 4x4 Pickumuptruck and another on my 4x4 Honda Foreman almost-ATV.
When using a Come-a-long take it easy. If you are alone it is a long and slow process wenching out a vehicle by hand. The idea is to free the vehicle before your arms wear out.

I can't agree more popgun. Have had to pull too many vehicles out of nasty spots whilst in the Army. One invaluable tool we carried is below:

"Snatch blocks are an invaluable tool in recovery situations. Snatch blocks double your winching capacity and enable a change in the angle of strain. A snatch block is used with a portable winch or a vehicle mounted winch. Using a snatch block increases a winches capacity by double and reduces the load by half. This is a energy saving device and invaluable for sticky stituations when the angle of your load does not comply with the direction of pull."
