Looking to get a semi-auto 223, detachable magazines that hold at least 20 rounds, that is MOA accurate or nearly so, without direct impingement operating system for less than $1500 dollars. The further below %1500 the better. It is for three gun and everyone I talk to wants to sell me an AR15. The piston operating systems raise the price way too far so I am looking for something else. I have looked at the Ruger Mini 14 and it seems like they have solved their accuracy problems but are there any other choices below $1500?

I think Saiga rifles can carry 20 rnds but not sure Here's a link If you're not familiar with them they are kinda strange looking rifles from Russia. Might be hard to find, I just looked at Gun Broker and they've got 36 entries for Russian American Armory but most are AK-47 type rifles, anyway the 223's go for around $7-8 hundred.

You might have a look at DPMSinc.com while you're at it.

Direct impingement AR-15 fits your bill to a T. better accuracy less moving parts. Under $1500. Don't see many MOA Mini 14's even when tricked out to exceed your $1500 limit.

Dawgdad,
I don't want a direct impingement rifle. They are a mess to clean and eat oil like an old Chevy. I can and will load for the rifle to gain all the accuracy it has to offer as long as it is NOT a direct impingement action.

Suz,
Are all the Saiga rifles built on the AK action?

Bushy,
DPMSinc. shows a lot of AR15s and I will look again but at a glance they were all direct impingement actions that I saw.

Have a look at Double Star.

star15.com/

I built at 16" Carbine and a 20" rifle using their lower.

Depends on what you feed it. I use IMR 8208 XBR and it runs clean for hundreds of rounds in match conditions. Use a ball powder like 748 or even another stick like RE-15 and it is a bit dirtier but really have never seen any difference in cleaning in the AR vs. the SKS I have. Of course, that eats cheap milsurp filthy ammo anyway...

Paulie I believe they are a Kalishnikov design based on the AK action. Never shot one or even seen one except on the internet. Wouldn't mind having a Saiga .308, but don't know about accuracy, I'm supposing they're reliable and well built.

Paul...I have the DPMS Oracle .308. I've ran several hundred rounds through it and have only cleaned the bore. Most I've done with the bolt is wipe it down and apply a fresh coat of artilary "red" grease. I've only done this once. I didn't find it all that dirty.

My powder of choice is H380.

Well, you all have given me a lot to think about and I am going to have to make my decision in the next 6 months so I will continue to deliberate. I'll try to get pictures up when I make a purchase and I will include pictures of my CZ too.
Thanks a bunch! all of you.

Don't know if you saw the copy of the American Rifleman. It has a .223 semi-auto, that isn't an AR15. It's probably a first cousin, but not an "AR" rifle. I also found the below link to the same rifle online. It's made by ARES Defense SCR. The review did say it has a heavy trigger.
