The gun used on Mr. Schaffer's New Zealand hunt was T/C Encore 209X50 that he sent to me for accurizing. When I received the gun, Mr. Schaffer told me that the best it would do was 3" at 100 yards, and that was on a "good day"! After I got my hands on it, did my work on it and shipped it back, I got a phone call from Mr. Schaffer, and he told me that his gun now shot under an inch at 100 yards, and most all groups were one-ragged-hole! He now had confidence in this gun to take it hunting, and these are his results |
If you don't mind my asking, do you recall what changes you made to his firearm that fixed the issues? Just curious.
Beautiful pictures of you work. I notice you do a lot of bull barrels and heavy contours. It looks like a lot of your rifles are meant to be shot from prone or "bean field" rifles. Do you do much work on lighter profile rifles like a mountain rifle?
Thanks for sharing.

Azar,
even though it's been a couple of years, I remember the work I did very well. I do the same work to a lot of muzzle loaders every year...

The first couple of years after T/C brought out the Encore, I repaired literally hundreds of busted stocks!
With the plastic/nylon stocks, no problems!
Laminated stocks, no problems!
Even now, probably a dozen times a year, maybe more, I still see walnut stocks that are busted in two in or behind the grip area.

Azar,

Trigger Job - 2 1/2 pounds
Oversize hinge pin
Cut off QLA and recrown with a tapered target crown
Modify scope base to 5-screws and add a pressure screw on the front of the base to keep it from flexing downward during recoil
Modified the forend "ears" so they do not contact the receiver
Installed neoprene washers between the barrel and forend to help deaden vibrations during firing
Thank you!
The rifles I build are per customer request...
I actually build a lot of slim profile mountain rifles.
I just finished a Remington 700 build in 7mm TCU for a lady out of Texas. Fully decked out with scope, this rig weighed in at less than 6 pounds!
The last 280 Ackley Improved I built went to Colorado, and scoped weight was exactly 7 pounds 6 ounces! |
Thanks for the reply. I find this kind of work fascinating, even if it's beyond my abilities.

thanks for that Mate...will pass it on...looking at that sexy green n gold build I can see its a heck of a lot stronger design than the other sort that have massive kink in them.

Wow!!! I have never seen that on a laminated stock before. That is downright scary looking! Any idea on the caliber? Seems like it would have taken a LOT of pressure to bust a laminate like that.

A very strange mode of failure for laminated wood indeed.
The only way to manage that would be to have all the laminate layer grain running in the same direction, not crosswise to each other.
Or its a .900 tyranosuarus..............

I wonder if they tried to use the butt as a hammer?

Yeah, I'm kinda wondering if that got cracked by some cause other than recoil.

Nice looking build!
What bullets are you going to run with that 1-7" twist rate barrel?
