I hope you put your practical tips and tricks here. I'm very interested because powder coating is one of those things I've never tried and I think it could be a great help to make your own soft lead hunting bullet... nerver to old to learn new tricks Smile

Ok I have solved the issues I had when trying to "Shake n Bake" boolits.

Use a container with recycling code 5 (polypropylene) - this is required to promote static charge on the cast lead.
My previous issue is because I use the wrong type of container and thus not getting a good coat.
Rigorously shake the cast bullets in the container with the powder for at least 2 minutes to ensure static built-up is strong enough to coat.

Once the lead cast are coated, dump the mixture onto a wire mesh to filter out the powder, then dump the lot into a tray covered with a sheet of aluminum foil.
Bake for 20 minutes at 180c and break them up once it is cooled.

Easy and effective.

Thanks. I didn't know about the PP. Seems I'm getting another project: I was planning to make "biltong", now I can also start looking for the ingredients to powdercoat. When I can shoot something with a powdercoated soft lead bullet both projects could meet... always like to combine things.

I got Pearl color so it is very close to normal lead.

Provided the sizing is not too much different in size, ALL the coating remains in place.

Recently I saw that someone on another site was using a product to "powder coat" their bullets that was intended as a car finish. It contained ceramics. This struck me as a bad idea. Wouldn’t the ceramic increase wear in the bore? Every round would have a lapping effect.

Interesting thought Punkin. The ceramic coating products for cars is actually a hardened type finish that is extremely smooth…it’s not pure ceramic…so I don’t think it is abrasive mate.

I am tired of using my lubrisizer and I think I should try the powder coating method.

I started powder coating my cast lead pistol and rifle bullets around 2015. I started out using Harbor Freight Red & Yellow which are epoxy based and their electrostatic gun to spray on the coating, it worked well but wasted lots of powder and left ridges around the uncoated bases of the bullets after they were sized.

I dropped the use of the HF powders and gun not long after that and moved on to using the Shake & Bake method and using better powders that I got from Smokes over on the Cast Boolit Forum or ordered online from Eastwood. Those powders are Polyester based TGIC powder that work best for Shake & Bake. Here is the NOE 30 XCB 170 gr. bullet I shoot in my 30-06 which I'm currently running around 2300 fps. I can push it faster, but for the ranges I shoot at and the accuracy I get the velocity is fine.
