Time to revisit an old thread. I’ve eased up on reloading for the SMLE #5 and decided to try some PPU Factory offerings that I’ve been thinking about for quite some time. PPU make two factory rounds that I’m interested in…a 180gr SP BT and a 150gr SP BT. I’m interested in the 180gn bullet because the factory loading was a 174gn, and I think the 6gn difference is negligible. As I mentioned in my Recoil Therapy thread…I gave them a try and I’m not greatly impressed by the 180gn offering, so I’m putting some thought into that weight bullet. I’m pretty sure I’ve tried the 150gr offering in the past, but I seeing some welcome changes to the bore of my rifle which is good.

I’d say that the guy who gave me this rifle had it stored for a few years and he did the right thing in oiling everything before putting it in a burlap sack for storage. Thing is, he used what appeared to be engine oil. This oil over time dried out and, whilst providing rust protection, sort of dried to a varnish type coating. I scrubbed with all sorts of solvents and cleaners and it didn’t really come up really shiny like a good bore should. Now with a fair few rounds down the bore, and regular cleaning with Hoppes #9 and recently Hoppes 9 Black, I noted the bore is becoming a nice clean, shiny silver colour. This is an indication that it is finally up to what it should be. The bore is in great condition and not really worn, so I would hazard a guess that it will outlive me.

Time to revisit the reloading bench and make up some handloads in the 150gn - 180gn range. Hornady make both a 150gn, and a 174 gr RN bullet for handloading, and the profile is very different to the PPU projectile, and I really like the look of the Hornady one in 174gr Interlock. Having said that, the 150gr looks good as well. Our “young” mate Elvis said to give the 123gr bullet, intended for the 7.62 x 39, a try as well although they are hellish expensive here in Oz. I note Hornady does a 125gr bullet too. If I can source them over here I might try them, depending on price.

My next problem will be powder and primers, although I have some of both, so I’m ok for a short time.
