Careful mate…we don’t want Milky’s head to swell too much…but yep, he is a damn fine hunter. I only wish I had his stamina and physical abilities in the bush…especially on the hills.

Fair enough mate…but how in blue blazes did you miss at 50 yards?

took it too cheaply and rifle was not sighted in...somehow.... 4" to right meant it zipped clean past the neck I was aiming at.

Yes, I know the feeling. When you think it's too easy and you don't concentrate it usually ends with a lot of cursing, even sleepless nights...

funny thing is that when you do the same shot just reacting without aiming, it'soften spot on. I think we learn that when using the shotgun... with a shotgun we often miss when we do aim at the target...

when everything should be very easy, everybody could do the trick (and most of the fun would be gone)

It’s not hard to miss when you haven’t sighted your rifle in and zeroed the sights. But, as Aloys says, if you use it like a shotgun and just point, you won’t be too far off the money.

I found it rather difficult to not “aim” my shotgun when I first started shooting clays…so many years of pistol and rifle shooting…but I eventually got the knack of keeping the shotgun on the move and ultimately claiming more targets.

beautiful day yesterday although windy as all heck...knew the wind would be swirly and only constant with it was it would be fair up our jacksee at worst possible moment, but too good of oppertunity to take buddy out for a walk and give Poppy some more training so we went anyway.
spooked a couple of what sounded like large deer in behind some windfall..I swear Meg n I have done so in same place twice before...this time I did tippy toe around it thing and got busted from further out..grrrrrr
carried on downwards and across through knee/waist high fern n crap, looked down and HELLO whats that??? yip deer, yip live and alert up went .270 and a 170grn speer round nose was sent all of 80 yards, deer never even got up out of bed, just rolled over dead...still kicking but dead..the 130grn coreloct at 6" was unneeded but didnt want it to thrash around and poke hole in dog who did ok job of locating him in the fern..bare with me while try to do photo thing.

this fella is a bit special to me. public land stag bush stalked and believe it of not its taken me best part of thirtyfive years to get a half decent stag in hard antler from this area.....its also my first royal (12 points) the other one Ive shot doesnt count as he was inside a deer paddock..wild deer who jumped in and it was 500 ha paddock but still no dice.
I nearly stuffed it as the coreloct pretty much exploded (they will do that at that range lol) the atlas joint is gone as it back of skull...but skull held together, will take up to my mate today as he does wonderful job of boiling out and whitening skulls(maybe he should have been a cannibal) the big seven point he did for me a few months ago came out beautifully.

Very nice mate…and well done to Poppy.

Tapping it while asleep in its bed feels a bit ordinary to me..a bit like a Texas Heart Shot…but you have to take them as they come I suppose. Given the chance, I think this bugger would have been up and off at the speed of a raped ape, so you wouldn’t have stood a chance at a shot. A goodly supply of venison for the freezer there too mate.
