A fairly busy week this week, plus we have the worry and concerns of our 21 (in two days) year old Grandson had a really bad car accident two nights ago. His being in Hospital, and there being no definitive answers on what the possible outcome is likely to be, has put my mind on his problems rather than my reloading. I do know that my brother had similar injuries from a motorcycle accident in the early 80’s and he subsequently lost his leg just below the knee.

He is in Townsville Hospital, after they stabilised him in Mt Isa and flew him by Flying Doctor to Townsville. He has a badly smashed leg (apparently with bone chips scattered everywhere from the break), a couple of vertebrae in his lower back are “cracked”, either his Sacrum or Coccyx is fractured (don’t know yet) and there is an air pocket in a lung. We don’t know yet exactly what happened. It was a single vehicle accident…we don’t know if he went to sleep or was going too fast. Which ever way, he lost control and the vehicle rolled a number of times for about 100m. He was found sitting on the side of the road. Worst part is he had been drinking (we think) and was possibly over the limit. Frankly, I think he was very lucky to have survived this accident. It happened only a couple of days before the 16th anniversary of his Father’s death on a motorcycle. I like to think Steve (his Father) was looking over him.

Tricia and I haven’t decided yet to fly up to Townsville, it all depends on when they decide they can operate on his back and leg.

Thanks everybody…that’s very much appreciated. They still can’t operate on his leg yet…too much swelling. I just hope he has a good Orthopaedic Surgeon and they can save his leg.

This accident has put an end to his Bull Riding as I strongly doubt, even if they save his leg, that he’ll be able to sit a bull in the ring. He had visions of winning four buckles this year…not anymore though. Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad

Thanks mate. Word we received was no operation for at least 6 days. However, they decided to operate on his leg yesterday morning, but what the outcome of that I’ve yet to hear.

They operated on his leg earlier than anticipated. They have plated his tibia and put screws in his ankle and stabilised everything. They are in need of the bed, so rather than keep him in Townsville Hospital, they have put him on a Flying Doctor aircraft and returned him to Mt Isa Hospital for Rehabilitation. Only time will tell now how this goes and how well he responds. It’s pretty much up to him now. At least he has survived which we are thankful for…he’s a very lucky guy.

Next time I see him (he lives 1800km north west of me), I plan on having a real heart to heart with him about his Dad, his Dad’s death and how he feels about it all. I am of the feeling that he is suffering PTSD from that happening, albeit 16 years ago.
