For some reason, I have wanted a flintlock shotgun and have been considering how to achieve that goal. Most muzzleloading shotguns offered for sale are percussion. I lucked out and got a .54 caliber smoothbore Green Mountain barrel that will fit a T/C Hawken for a bargain price. Then I called T/C and got some of their discontinued .54 over powder bore buttons to use as over powder and/or over shot wads. Last week, I was surfing the Cabelas website and found .54 sabot cups that will serve as shot capsules. I ordered them and the brown truck dropped them off the other day. Now if the temperature gets above freezing, I will go to the range and see what happens. All the best...

Hi Gil, used to shoot a .54 cal. percussion shotgun years ago. It's still around, bro. has it. But if I remember right, we used 28 ga. power pistons in it and reduced the charge a little due to the better seal from the power piston. Worked great. Check it out. See ya',,,,,,,,terry.

terry,
Thanks for the information. I may have the local gunsmith ream the bore a bit to work with 28 gauge or even 20 gauge wads. All the best...

You may not need any reaming to use the 28 ga. wads, I think they are already .54 cal. Do what's best & enjoy.

I will give the 28 gauge wads a try. All the best...

The 28 gauge wads work very well in the .54 caliber smoothbore. All the best...

Gil, hows that smoothbore working out for you? I received a single trigger Renegade Hunter with a gorgeous stock that I bought off of Gunbroker for a reasonable price. I just ordered a flintlock .62 caliber smoothbore barrel from Green Mountain for it. I will probably try to sell the .50 percussion barrel and the percussion lock that came with the gun. I plan on removing the rifle sights from the .62 barrel and just installing a low front blade. I too have always wanted a flintlock shotgun and this should make a dandy.

roklok,
The setup is excellent. I took a few leather ammo pouches and put them on a black nylon web belt. The pouches hold an assortment of powder charges, round balls, patches, 28 gauge shot cups, shot cartridges and over shot wads. At the range, I showed by significant other what it will do to clay pigeons. I use 60 grs. FFG and one ounce of #6 or #7 1/2 shot. I plan to take it hunting this fall for squirrels. It is delightful. All the best...

Just got my .62 flintlock barrel today, cant wait to try it out. It appears that 20 guage shot cups are a perfect fit in the bore which measures .610 by my calipers. I have to wait to shoot it till I get a cleaning jag, one was not provided with the barrel.

Dont know about the Flintlock shotgun but I have 2 percussion shotguns from pedersolli, A 12 gauge and a 20 gauge. I love them both and enjoy them a great deal.
