Hey Deer Sniper, isn't the second gun a modified handi-rifle survivor?

Yes Sir, it is...

I cut the barrel back to 16 1/4", recrowned the muzzle and added the muzzle brake. I also reworked the trigger and added 5 screws to the base instead of the factory 3...

This little gun will consistantly keep 3 bullet holes touching at 75 yards with the 180 gr. Grand Slam loads and shooting the Hornady 155 gr. A-MAX, which I use on deer, it will keep 5-shots right at an inch at 100 yards....

I thought it was. You must have sent it in to H&R to get a 30-30 barrel fitte to it because they usually come in .223 or .308. Looks good.

I've been trying to get them to make me a 26" barreled .243. All it would take is, instead of machining a 25-06 barrel all the way to 25-06, simply stop at a .243. They won't do it. They won't even cut a standard .243 at 26".

No Sir, I never sent it back in to H&R. I bought the gun new with a wood stock set and then ordered the thumbhole stock and forend and installed it myself...

If you wanted a 26" 243 barrel in stainless steel, I could make you one. I just finished building an octagon barrel in 250 Savage Ackley Improved for the H&R and am now working on a 7X30 Waters for the H&R...

In case you hadn't guessed, I build custom guns and barrels. Bolt actions, Ruger #1, T/C Contender and Encore as well as H&R and hunting handguns and revolvers...

Wanna see one of my H&R's in 17 Fireball that has a 1.062" diameter bull barrel on it???

How much for that 26", .243 or better yet a 6mm Rem.? I'd want it for an H&R.

What twist? I'm thinking 1 in 7 R/H ballard rifling would be good.

Doesn't have to be a bull barrel, just a little heavier than standard like maybe slow taper to .625 OD at the muzzle, .0625 recessed crown and an integral scope rail??? Maybe even 360deg., 50-60% reduction ported. What do you think? Sniper

A 26" barrel in 243, 6mm or 6mm Ackley Improved in stainless steel would run $450.00 in a 1-10" twist...

Going to a more specialized twist rate like a 1-7" twist would increase the price because it would come from someone like Lilja, Hart or Krieger. I normally use Shilen, Douglas or Pac-Nor barrel blanks but that usually depends on the customer and their preference...

I don't port barrels but I can add a muzzle brake to the barrel that has a near seamless fit....

Looks like some nice work there! And my (relatively long) wish list includes a .300 H&H Mag barrel for my Encore...

Thanks Mike...

The barrel with muzzle brake pictured is an Encore barrel that I "built" and chambered in 300 Winchester...

For your 300 H&H, you could either rechamber a 308 Winchester barrel or a 30-06 barrel to get the chambering you want. Or else, you could go with a full custom barrel like the one pictured....

last I checked the 300 H&H was available from Thompson Center's custom shop for the Encore.

Is that muzzle break removeable meaning the barrel would be threaded? I would probably want a kreiger barrel in 1 in 7. Would that have the R/H Ballard rifling?

You mentioned a 6mm Ackley. I haven't heard of that one. Is there enough difference in power between the two? The thing I'm looking at with that chambering is where would I find dies for loading and would it be worth it.

BTW, we could take this into the PMs.

d_hoffman,

the muzzle brake IS screwed onto the barrel but it is not set up as removable...

A 6mm Ackley Improved is the 6mm Remington case blowed out to minimum body with a 40 degree shoulder angle. This "improved" design is preferred in the H&R single shots as the minimum body taper allows the case head to transmit less backthrust against the standing breech face...

The 6mm Ackley Improved gives a velocity of some 300+ fps. higher velocity over the standard 243 Winchester...

All reloading die manufacturers make dies for the 6mm A-I and reloading data starts with the same data as that of the 6mm Remington and is worked up from there...

I'll post a picture of an H&R Ultra that started out as a factory 243 Winchester but, was soon rechambered to the 6mm A-I....

The case on the left is a standard factory 6mm Remington and the nickel plated case on the right is a 6mm Ackley Improved that has been fired in the barrel after rechambering it from a 243 Winchester...

Besides rechambering, the muzzle was recrowned with an 11 degree target crown and a muzzle brake was added...

The trigger has been reworked down to a very crisp and creep free 15 ounces...

The forend had been pillar and glass bedded...

The base and barrel has been modified for the longer and larger 8-40 screws...

After this gun had been completely reworked and load development was complete, consistand 3-shot groups of 3/4" or less was easily obtained at 100 yards when fired off a bench....

That looks like some really nice work. I noticed that the barrel has the "SB2 Ultra" nomenclature. Is it a reworked 24" bull barrel? If so, that could save me a bunch of money.

Thank You and yes Sir, it is a reworked H&R Ultra SB-2 / 24" bull barrel...

Most guys do rework these bull barreled guns for the simple fact that it does save them a bunch of money...

Here are some of the rechambering options for the H&R Ultra / bull barreled guns -

223 to 222 Rem. Mag. Improved / 5.6X50R Improved / 225 Winchester / 219 Zipper Improved...

243 Winchester to 6mm Ackley Improved / 243X444 / 243 WHITE EXPRESS...

25-06 to 25-06 Ackley Improved...

280 to 280 Ackley Improved...

308 to 308X444 / 308X444 Improved...

30-06 to 30-06 Ackley Improved...

Rechambering options for some of the N.E.F. single shots are -

22 Hornet to 22 K-Hornet...

30-30 to 30-30 Ackley Improved...

357 magnum to 357 Maximum...

44 magnum to 445 Super Mag / 444 Marlin...

These are just some of our most popular rechambering options that we do on these particular single shots...

Other work on the H&R / N.E.F. single shots includes trigger jobs, forend bedding, muzzle recrowning, barrel shortening, muzzle brakes and base and barrel modification to a 5-screw design or larger and longer 8-40 screws and barrel stubbing...

We make these guns perform like they are supposed to and in many cases, the accuracy achieved with these guns will match what can be achieved with a lot of bolt actions...

Like most break open single shots, best accuracy comes from the use of "rimmed" cases and "improved" case designs. Reason being is that headspace is better controlled and held to a minimum....
