Greetings all!

I finally got my Remington 700 SPS Varminter in 22-250 to feed cartridges correctly when housed in a cheap Choate varminter stock, My dies set to my chamber, and now I'm on to my final problem before refinishing and making the holes down range get close together.

My problem is I require a lighter trigger than the 3.5 lbs of the already adjusted factory trigger (X-Mark Pro?) holds. It's great for a deer rifle trigger pull, but I need it to be lighter for prairie dogs and coyotes.

I took a peak at what our friends at Brownells have to offer and I found several different triggers to choose from. I am trying to keep the original safety as it's a hunting rifle and I don't want to have to replace the bolt shroud (if that's still possible) to add a safety. I would love a two stage trigger but am open to a single stage trigger.

I did run into a new concept I am curious about. two or three lever setups. I see in the descriptions one is more reliable as they say, but I was curious about how you folks feel about this.

I would like to stay under 1-1/2 lbs. and open to suggestions. The only after market trigger I have had problems with is Jewell and understandably I will shy away from them. I'm curious what do you folks run and/or recommend?

I put a Timney on a Rem 700 .35 Whelen last year. Its almost too light for my taste but I think more dry firing will get me used to it. I'd recomend it.

The Jewell specimen I dealt with was for the AR platform, I was not impressed by the design, workmanship, and sporadic performance. I have used others in other rifles that work, so I don't come out and discount them to others, I just made the decision to never use one from them again. I am picky when it comes to firearm components, I have trusted my life to a firearm and ever since made it a point to go with what I know works. Your results may very.

I don't have a M700 yet, will be the purchase after this one (the M1A). And was considering a Jewell trigger as a upgrade.

Gonna start saving for a M700 now though, chambered in 30-06Spring.

Should be a good rifle for you. If Remington is still putting in that adjustable trigger, It will be great for a bigger critter getter, Imho.

Want to end up with a precision rifle/do it all hunting rifle with this M700 actually.

So looking out for a good deal on a used Remington, cause I'm planning on removing the barrel etc on it anyways.

JBird...how are ya mate? 1.5lbs is a very light trigger, although not that light to be dangerous. Personally, I would strongly suggest a trip to your trusted gunsmith for his advice on brand of trigger and most importantly tuning and setting. Unless you are competent in this area it is conceivable that you could "tune" your trigger to a point where it breaks as light as you want it, but it may not necessarily be safe. Nothing worse than having your rifle fire when it wasn't supposed to.

I have heard good things about Timney triggers and I seriously considered putting one in my Weatherby, but finances beat me....I hate being a pensioner. Another idea would be to have a competent gunsmith tune the Remington trigger for you. Might not be all that expensive to get what you want.

If I was replacing a varmit/target rifle trigger in a bolt gun my first choice would be the Jewell.

I do understand your position on it, I feel the same way about Kimbers!!!!!!!!!!!!

My next choices would be the Timney and Rifle Basix

As for the two and three lever setups, and set triggers of this or that design, just more moving parts you don't need!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The factory Remington triggers can be tuned up. Although going under a 1 1/2lbs on them is a bit much. Cleaning them up for a deer rifle is one thing, making them into a target trigger is another. You will be ahead of the game by putting your money into the aftermarket unit.

I dropped a Timney in my Mauser .243 and love it! Easy installation and adjustment of the pull. Mine is set at 2#.

It does take some remembering which gun you have in your hand if you have guns with different trigger weights. I had grown accustomed to my two stage service rifle match 4.5# trigger on my AR and missed the first coyote I shot the .243 at this year. I applied first stage 3# pressure to the 2# single stage trigger before the getting the cross hairs exactly where I wanted. I did give the yote a dirt shower though...

I put the Rifle Basix in my Savage set a 2.5 lbs. some say it's too light for hunting, but I think it's just right. Good Luck.

Timney all the way! have them in all rifles that can have them and they are great. Recently i purchased one for my AR, WOW! What a difference, went from 6 lbs to 2lbs 3oz's consistantly. Shooting went from shotgun patterns to actual groups .

Watching this thread with interest. I just bought a Remington 700 SPS Varmint in .223
I was interested in a Stevens mod. 200 and timiny had a trigger for it. Timiny offers two triggers for the 700 but they seem kinda dear in cost.
The Rem's trigger is great but just a tad heavy for gophers out at 200+ yrds.
