Vint,
Really, I'm NOT trying to be difficult. What IS the new way?
BAG Christians and BB Christians have difficulty answering a question. |
Laws can change according to the whim of man but the teachings of Christ are eternal!! |

Well according to the bible the punishment for murder is pretty simple:
"Whoso sheddeth man's blood, by man shall his blood be shed: for in the image of God made he man." Genesis 9:6
"Anyone who strikes a man and kills him shall surely be put to death." Exodus 21:12
"If men who are fighting hit a pregnant woman and she gives birth prematurely but there is no serious injury, the offender must be fined whatever the woman's husband demands and the court allows. But if there is serious injury, you are to take life for life eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, burn for burn, wound for wound, bruise for bruise." Exodus 21:22-25
"Anyone who kills a person is to be put to death as a murderer only on the testimony of witnesses. But no one is to be put to death on the testimony of only one witness. Do not accept a ransom for the life of a murderer, who deserves to die. He must surely be put to death." Numbers 35:30-31
"Do not pollute the land where you are. Bloodshed pollutes the land, and atonement cannot be made for the land on which blood has been shed, except by the blood of the one who shed it." Numbers 35:33
"For he is God's servant to do you good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword for nothing. He is God's servant, an agent of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer." Romans 13:4 Talking about Government under God, ie a Government fallowing God is a agent of God and may use the sword (ie Capital punishment) to punish the wrong doers according to the laws of God which are in the Old Testament.

Vint,
Again, I'm not trying to be difficult.
You say in one post that, in a Christian's view, the Old Testament is irrelevant, but still you quote it in another.
In one post, man-made laws don't count either, but in another, only man-made laws on CERTAIN subjects don't count.
Since I don't own a Bible, I'll not be referring to any passages you suggest. I have my beliefs, and feel no need to refer to a book of stories to reinforce them, regardless of of the Author of the stories.

Allow me Vint.
D,
These are all OLD Testament references, and in no way reflect the teachings of Jesus.

No but the qoute from the Romans is New Testament as well as when Paul says in Acts 25:11:
"If, however, I am guilty of doing anything deserving death, I do not refuse to die. But if the charges brought against me by these Jews are not true, no one has the right to hand me over to them. I appeal to Caesar!"
When he was going on trial for "crimes" which he didn't commit he states if he did commit them he'd be willing to take the punishment for the crimes he has been accused of, which is death, but since he hasn't committed those crimes he is appealing to the courts.

So you see my point.
If it's advantageous to use OT quotes, it's OK to do so.
Otherwise, it's OK to condemn it....

Not many references about Jesus and capital punishment in the bible but one of the few:
"For God said, 'Honor your father and mother and Anyone who curses his father or mother must be put to death." Matthew 15:4

Murder is never right according to the bible, but the bible separates murder and carrying out capital punishment to punish the people who break Gods laws and as well separates murder from soldiers fighting wars.

D,
You seem to be very knowledgeable in Religious affairs. It seems as though your beliefs are consistant with my upbringing. Although I would no longer be considered as "practicing" in the strict sense of the word, I don't think that a visit to a "building" and a monetary offering should define your religious experience.

I agree 110%. believing in Christ as your savior or any other religion shouldn't revolve around visiting a building and a "holy man". I do go to church and talk to Priests at times though.
Also CSSA is Canadian Shooting Sports Association, combined with CILA (Canadian Institute for Legislative Action) is the Canadian equivalent of the NRA.
