.270 Win. Brass Problem

I am working up some loads for my cousins .270Win.(Remmington 700). After FL sizing the brass, I took a fired case(fired from this rifle)and put a bullet in to set the seating depth. The case would not chamber. I tried a few more from the same box and none of them will chamber. What would the reason be for brass that was fired out of this rifle not chambering(the bolt will not close)? I can't make sense of it. The brass I sized will chamber, but I had to set the die way down further than I am used to setting it to make this happen. Any ideas? Thanks

It depends. Was the brass trimmed to the proper length? What is the cartridge overall length? If the brass was properly sized and trimmed and the OAL is correct and under maximum, the cartridge should chamber. All the best...

Hot load could of stretched the brass alot or just matbe is was not fired in thar gun. Full length resize them and try again. Check case length, try chambering them without a bullet. Normaly they should rechamber if fired from the same gun. If no sucess toss them and start over. Make sure your die are set for full length alsp. Good luck!

I was using just the case to see if it would chamber, thats why it seems strange to me. The brass that was fired in the rifle is the brass that will not chamber, the brass I sized will chamber okay. I haven't loaded any of it yet. The brass is all once fired brass from this rifle. The unsized, untrimed length is between 2.535" and 2.540". I trimmed the sized brass to 2.530". I had to turn the die two full turns down from the spot where it touched the shell holder to get the brass to chamber nicely. I load .308, 30-30, .223, and 44mag by the tons for myself and of course I have the methods down for these calibers. This is the first time I've messed with .270, I just figured it would be the same as the rest. I can't figure out why it should have stretched or expanded to the point where it will no longer fit the rifle it came from.

The mystery is solved, and I feel a little stupid. I called my cousin and asked him for sure if all this brass was originally fired in his rifle, and he said it was. I explained to him the trouble I was having and he said I didn't have HIS rifle, I had his SON'S rifle, case closed, sorry for the crazy questions. Embarassed

I wouldn't loose any sleep over it mate. Your "problem" caused many to start thinking, which can only be a good thing. At least you know that the two chambers are different and you can tell your cousin to ensure he keeps the brass for each rifle separate.

Like you said Vince, thinking is a good thing. It is nice to ask questions here and not get whacked over the head for our ignorance.

Another example of what GUTS encountered:

I gave 120 cases of 'once-fired' brass to a friend who wanted to work up a load for his new rifle. He had to size them right away as they were too big for his chamber - rifles are same make/model but made 30 years apart.
