Well now that the deer and elk hunts are over (I got skunked Sad ), I guess I 'll go back to some of the areas I hunted and try for some of the coyotes that tempted me every other day.
What are the rest of you doing?

Heading out under the full moon tonight for some night hunting. Only my second time out this year looking for song dogs.

Dawg where are you that you can hunt them at night? Do you wear a red light? Do you use shotgun or rifle?

Illinois has a 24 hour season from early November to mid February.

We use red or amber lights but on nights like tonight with a huge full moon and some light snow cover we may not even need that. I usually have a rifle and a shotgun or a pistol along with the light. Three people are easier to conceal in the dark so one runs the light and the calls the other two watch for little yellow eyes bouncing in. Once we get a set locked in we leave the light just over them so the eyes are in the halo. If they start to hang up we flip the colored lense off and "burn" them with full intensity. They usually stop for the split second we need to get the shot off.

The shotguns come in handy when they do not hang up and keep charging in. Buckshot will take care of them when they get inside 50 yards. We had one run over a buddies legs one night. I don't know who was more scared, my buddy or the coyote. I think they both wet themselves. I was laughing so hard at him I could not get a shot off.

Man, you got me laughing! That is funny, getting run over by a coyote. Sounds like a fun night.
