Lat nite i opened a bag of virgin brass, I stuffed them full of winchester large rifle primers and went to the bench with a brand new lbs of varget.I stuffed 21 cartriges with powder so I would have seven groups of 3.I started at 39.0 grains and in 1/2 grain increments went up to 42.0I backed a 139 grain hornady spire point boat tail .005 off of the lands and took the little recipes to the range this morning and the results are as follows.
39.0 gr .768 group
39.5gr .295 group
40.0gr 1.128 group
40.5 gr .685 group
41.0 gr.574 group
41.5 gr 1.194 group
42.0 gr 1.363 group

I think I pulled 1 in the 40.0 grain group

I'll have to get this logged to the library But I definetly think my rifle will shoot better than I do

Looks like you’ve got some good results with the Varget and standard primers !!!

Two things for you to think about.
First, I see your running the bullet .005 off the lands. Don’t be afraid to run them deeper. Seating on the lands or close to can be over rated. I’ve had two 7MM08’s that proved this.

Second, I’m willing to bet you were dealing with wind blowing from your left to your right. More than likely switching between angling towards you then away from you.

rdwllce...I don't want to sound like a bad guy, but why do people post targets and never reference the distance? Was that 1 yard or 1,000 yards?

I have very old .30 WCF (60 Yrs old) that can print one hole with 3 shot groups at 1 yard and 1 5/8" at 100 yards...Sooo.......???? Very Happy

Know the feeling...It took me over 8 years to finally hit on a load for that ol' jack handle, but when I did... Party

I'm getting the same three shot spread (1 5/8") with my .30-06 at 200 yards...

It DOES take patiance. There are those on here that do even better. They are our "go to" experts... Very Happy

You also had it seated deep with different primers and powder !!!
You’ve started all over, don’t be afraid to try it again. It might make a good load better or make it ugly again.

Virgin brass has been responsible for some of my best groups. Don’t be thinking you need to blow your cases out to your chamber to get good results. All you’ll be doing is wasting bullets, powder, and primers.

A little tip for the wind. Some dowel rods and surveyors tape make inexpensive direction indicators that will help tighten your groups.

Well thank you folks, I try to load 7 3 shot groups on saturday nights and get to the range at sunrise sunday morning.I kinda pick up trash a lil till the sun is up enough or the fog rises enough to shoot, I end up with the whole range to my self.Makes me look selfish doesn't it.Like I said earlier , after all of these years I am learnig to reload. And I am enjoying it a whole lot more.

Hijackers, pay attention, your hijacking is not appreciated here at hunting nut. It is poor manners to change the subject of someones post. I do not have to name names, all you have to do is look around to know who our regular hijackers are.
It is time to clean up your hijacking ways or expect me to contact Dallen to have you placed on probation here or blocked if you continue hijacking.
