That'll buff out ;).....

A bit of file work and you have a finger rest in the ricasso.

Was that a new piece of flat steel or something reclaimed.
Its also a bummer when it self destructs on one of the final steps.
Nice shape all in all.

Yeah...no problems Gelan...as Pete says; it'll buff out mate.

Actually, that's a real bugger mate. It looks like you have a lot of work invested in that blade. It might have been saveable except for the rather nasty looking crack about an inch in front of the missing chunk.

Oh well, back to the drawing board buddy. Maybe you have a mate in the Knife Forum who could forge the metal into another shape mate.

This piece going to sit in my desk drawer, as a reminder "not to hurry"

Geland, quenched in water or oil? I made a knife from an old file, quenched it in water and had the same result. Made an extra fingergroof and saved it...

and forging such thin blade? It will easely just burn...

Just grind it down a bit and make a finger nail scraper out of it.

Would still be enough to make a cabinet makers marking knife. I had one with a nice size handle that was much easier to control than the ones you can buy today.

Oops missed the crack forward of the missing bit, makes resurrection a bit hard.

There is no way to tell if that was a flaw in the steel or too fast a quench. (maybe both?)
It will make a nice letter opener for your desk drawer.
You should engrave it with "oops" just forward of the tang - might as well have some fun with it.
We shouldn't take life too seriously... nobody gets out alive.

LOL.. yes it is too fast quench, supposed to be done in interrupted quench method,
2-3 second immersion and 3-5 seconds up in the air - and repeat until steel is cooled down to about 400 C,
I must have been day dreaming and just immerse without lifting it up.

Yeh.. I am making another few of these for an order from my gunsmith.

All of the knives I have made from old files I quenched in old motor oil Aloys, although I'm sure vegetable oil would do the job as well. I pull the blade from the fire/heat, check it with a magnet to ensure it is at least 800F, the put the full length of the blade into a jam tin full of oil, then leave it there until it cools completely. The top of the oil will more than likely catch fire, but that is ok. Motor oil leaves the blade a bit messy...black and a bit scaly, almost like it is made from damascus...but it cleans and polishes off easy enough.
