Canadian Armed Forces
You take a huge dysfunctional cross-section of Canadian society.
You make a highly professional team out of them.
You send them to do a job that nobody wants to do in places where nobody wants to go.
You separate them from their families and loved ones for months on end, at a moments notice and with little warning.
You push them until they push themselves further than they ever imagined they could.
You expect them to act and behave out of uniform as they do within uniform.
You expect their families to live a life that no others experience and still support the cause with all they have.
You pay them with a little praise and pride but never with the money they truly deserve to earn.
You don't pay them overtime, time-and-a-half or triple-time no matter how many statutory holidays they work.
You don't allow them to be represented by a union or to go on strike- not that they ever would.
You pay them based on what you call commensurate levels within the civil-service when there is no comparison to what they do.
You tell them " If we break you, we will fix you. And if we can't fix you, we will pay for you." even though you know that is an empty promise. And you don't tell them it is something that they will have to fight for.
You tell them they are the best of the best and crucial to the team and the mission. Then you dismiss them when they are broken and hurt- and they accept that because they know that the team and the mission are more important than themselves.
You foster a sense of belonging and brotherhood and tell them they are of a different breed until they become family. And then when their time is up you expect them to go happily to the four winds to never see their brothers and sisters again.
But overall you instill in them Leadership, Honour, Loyalty, Integrity, Self-Sacrifice and Duty.
And then you make them accountable to a Public who holds them to a far higher standard than it expects of itself.
And you wonder why they don't adjust well to civilian life?"
I have a large embroidered patch given to me by a friend while he was on a motorcycle ride to Texas. It reads : The Nation that forgets it's defenders will itself be forgotten." I will post a picture of it.
It is so sad that all of the western worlds' defenders of freedom are used and thrown away. Friggin Sad
