Hi,
Just bought a CVA Scout in 45-70 and would like to know what reloading data I should use with this rifle, as you may know most reloading compagny advertized 3 reloadings level: old trap door action , lever action like 1895 Marlin and strong action like Ruger #1. I have a Ruger #1 that I reload since many years and for sure I will not use these reloads. I would like to know what you think.
Thank you

I don't know the CVA Scout, but I have several 45 Governments, going from the Marlin lever action to the Ruger N°1 Lyman Centennial.
First you look at the factory recommendations which would give you the maximum allowed reloads and then you reload your 45-70 for the use you want. Be it soft lead bullet and black powder (I would recommend to put a waxed carton between bullet and powder), a reduced load (please read the comments in Lee's Reloading Manual on this!) or an elephant hunting load.
That old cartridge will live and give love forever, it will please any shooter as long as he (or she) uses the recommendations and some common sense.
So: welcome in the club!

Remember, they killed bison with those "Trapdoor" loads. I'd stick with those because they have plenty of power and less recoil.

I Just got info from BPI Outdoors the CVA owner and they told me to use lever action load for the Scout with no problems at all.

I shoot 45-70 a lot from my Buffalo Classic H&R, but usually I only shoot low pressure subsonics.
I load from 330 grains all the way up to 550 grains lead projectiles, never copper coated.
I find that I can tune the load to match my 22lr trajectory thus I do not have to worry about over or under holds for out of range targets.
My loads are good enough to head shot rabbits up to about 100 meters.
I find faster high power loads are not as accurate.
