I have recently purchased an unfinished fajen walnut stock for my Remington 700 6mm. Now I have refinished several old guns using mini-wax stain and Birchwood Caseys Tru-Oil, and although the guns came out beautiful they are awefull shiny. I was wondering if anybody has a recipe for a more satin oil rub look. I have heard of using boiled linseed oil, but don't know if I should use it straight or cut it with something.

Go to www.lauerweaponry.com and click on down through Wood Finishing/Other Supplies/Finishing Grit and you will find Pumice Stone which is used for a hand rubbed satin finish on wood stocks. Use this after the oil has been applied and then buff it out with the pumice stone. This is powdered finely and works great. I have used this myself and was very satisfied with the results and I think you will be too.

I personally don't like the Tru Oil look. I have used both BLO and pure Tung Oil, but I like Tung Oil the best. Once the stock is the appropriate color I apply Tung Oil diluted about 4 to 1 with mineral spirits or some other reducer to allow it to seal the grain. I apply several coats and once the grain is sealed I then apply several coats of pure Tung Oil sanding with 0000 Steel Wool between coats.

The key is to obtain % 100 Pure Tung Oil, not the Tung Oil finish that you commonly find at the usual places. There is a huge difference as the Tung Oil finishes are mostly varnish.

Just take your time and allow each coat to dry and then use the steel wool to buff out the shine. As suggested pumice stone on the final coats will work equally well as will a bone. Yes, a bone works very well too.

Once finished and everything is dry then comes the wax. I use a very high quality wax in multiple coats. This method simplified here gives me the satin finish I like....
