Now thats a damn fine idea my little Cherokee maiden. My mate and I recycled all of our split, cracked, worn out brass and got over a $130 for it at the scrap metal yard. The price of brass and lead has gone through the roof here in Australia....seems the Chinese are buying up as much as they can find for their industry.
Now here's a thought.........if each and everyone of us who hunt on public land carry a small bag and pick up a kilogram (2.2lb) of spent brass casings everytime we went out we could help fund our hunting/shooting activities and also do something for the environment. It might also help keep the environmentalists off our back. |
Keetoowah started this one when she made the above observation in Spamorama. I reckon thats its a great idea. What sayest thou?
Cheers, Vince

I wonder why noone has replied this topic
oh well i ll start a conversation then,
i myself dont pick up spent cases except the ones from my 300 because we dont have a facilty here where we can bring them and we dont reload either so that makes it all but useless to pick em up and btw are they even bad fro the enviroment, if yes, in what way?

Leave it the way you found it is kind of the way I operate.

Well Daniel, I don't think that I would necessarily consider brass to be bad for the environment because the two elements making up the alloy....copper and zinc....are naturally occurring elements anyway. However, it is unsightly and the grubs that leave their brass behind also leave a lot of other crap and corruption. The discarded brass is only the tip of the iceberg.
These idiots have no thought or consideration for the environment, which includes the flora and fauna....fauna being our biggest concern because it is after all what we hunt.
Its a shame that you don't have a metal recycler nearby. As I said, you can very easily fund your hunting activities by cashing in scrap metal.

I agree wholeheartedly with this sentiment Tracks old mate...... but I clean up all of my rubbish and take it out and try to clean up as much as I can of some other lazy cretins as well.
As they say...leave nothing behind but footprints.

Growing up I did a lot of "environmental" camping. Which I guess is the fancy way of saying backwoods camping, not having the car within a 5 minute walk. Whatever we broght with us we brought back with. And normally we broght even more back with us since people don't realize that there aren't any street sweepers on trails.
As for brass what we would find we would pick up even though it didn't fit ours. Would give it to friends/relatives or make things out of them. Wind chimes, earrings, key chains.

I have always left a camp site cleaner then I found it if I camped in a regular camp site. If I had the good fortune to camp where no one had before all I left behind was flattened grass, foot prints and a few hoof prints...I even cover my cook fire pit with clean dirt...
Yeh Vince...How did we miss this one...??

This is a constant fight and one that I have been involved in for 50 years. One of the very first things my children were tought was respect for the property of others. Those who do not respect others can not respect themselves. That process is quite simple.
When I depart a location I have one rule, take more than you brought and leave nothing to indicate you were ever there.

Bushy and Vince, et al, absolutely. I usually try to do something extra for a campsite when I leave, maybe split and stack a bit of wood for the next guy or something like that, hopefully people will follow the "pay it forward"
