Had a fun morning yesterday chasing some cottontails, along with the help of my bird/rabbit dog. These days make winter very enjoyable. Very Happy

Bunnies...did someone say BUNNIES....woo hoo....love rabbit huntin'.

Great day hunting there Moose...and I'm sure your mutley enjoyed it every bit as much as you did mate. Did the rabbits go in the pot mate, or did the dawg get a treat?

I always take my .22 rimfire and my 12g O/U when I go chasing rabbits...I have a ball. Nothing better than sitting in cover sniping a rabbit warren with a single shot .22 rimfire loaded with subsonics...rabbits have no idea what is going on...there mates just keep falling over. wtf Confused I love it.

Cheers, Vince

I haven't hunted rabbits in quite some time. I remember when I was a teenager, you had to check their livers for spots. Can't remember the details anymore. Do you still need to do this?

Hey slimjim, how's it going. I do believe what you are remembering is what is called Tularemia or Rabbit Fever. It is caused by a bacterium. Checking the liver is one way of noting if the animal has it or not. Outbreaks of this disease are most prevalent in jackrabbits. I really can't remember the last time that there was an outbreak of this disease in this area. Though, as a result, I don't know anyone that will eat a jackrabbit either. Cottontails though, are still on the menu. Have a good one. Smile

Was out in the desert this weekend for a ride with some friends....
Went bunny huntin' sunday before breakfast, popped out of my tent, laced up my boots and took off w/ my scoped .22lr.
Zippo wabbits sighted.
Got a good sized crow on the hop from 40y- he almost got away cuz of that crappy trigger! Mad

Almost. Razz

I love walkabouts with the lil ultralight .22lr. Cool

Haha Haha Haha Haha

Worst problem I've encountered with rabbits out here is hydatids...very nasty. I always wear plastic gloves when skinning. Any sign of a blister or little white spots and its in the fire...real quick. You can find the blisters anywhere under the skin or in the body cavity. The blister has a clear liquid in it, and more often than not the little tiny white larvae. You will sometimes find the little larvae in the meat as well. The liver is usually the worst place it hits though.
