8-O Shocked I sure glad I'm not your Insurance Agent/Adjuster!!!! Shocked Shocked :

I was one of those for 35 years. I have never hit an animal that wasn't dead, but handled some deer accidents. One totalled a small Nissan; the driver was o.k., tho.

I turned my paperwork in, and the examiner emerged from whatever chemical fog he was in that day, and asked "HOW do you know it was a deer? I told him "From the color of the hair stuck to the blood, and the foot of intestine hanging from the rear view mirror! You want pictures?" He never answered. Confused

I guess animals have an excuse, but people? Some are really dumb, or think they are immortal, or something.

I had a case where a fellow, visiting from San Francisco, no less, was jogging along a trail that crossed a main highway. No vision obstructions for 150 yds. He thought he could beat the oncoming traffic, and ran in front of a pick up truck, which picked him off neatly. The driver had no chance to react, much less stop. Naturally, severe injuries resulted. One witness in the car behind said he was "hauling ass" when he ran into the road.

He later tried to sue the State, because it was a State road/jogging path he got hit on. After I explained the facts of life to his attorney, they went away.

Popgun...Have you ever thought of driving on the road instead of in the bushes. Maybe you wouldn't hit so many animals. Got to be hard on cars and pickups.... Very Happy

Shocked I was on my way to work one morning in the usuall rush. I had tried to get ahead of a Ford F-450 cube van before the road narrowed into single lane traffic. We were moving pretty quick for the road -about 70 to 80 km/h- when I see this whitetail doe come out of the bush on the run. She must of had a death wish because she tried racing the van ahead of me. I didn't even see brake lights when she cut in front those guys. Needless to say she didn't make it. It was quite amazing, actually. To hear the impact and see pieces of the vehicle balloon out from all sides is quite unnerving. The deer literally flew about 30 feet into the ditch with her legs buckled under her in a grotesqe fetal position and her face a contorted gasp of having the air -among other things - knocked out of her. I stopped to help the three guys in the van and saw the destroyed front end which was mostly cosmetic, luckily. There was deer stuff all over it and even some feces on the air foil above the cab. I personally know a lot of people that hit deer and moose some on a regular basis. It's not an experience I want to have. I was asleep in the back of a 1985 Pontiac Acadian when a buddy of mine clipped the back end of a deer late at night. I woke up thinking we had drifted into oncoming traffic. My uncle was driving a 1974 Plymouth Fury III (big boat of a car - back when they were made of metal) when a deer jumped in front of him. There were guard rails on both sides of the road so he just gripped the wheel and didn't even bother slowing down. The deer took a tumble down the side of his car with barely any damage done. A cousin-in-law rolled a car trying to avoid a rabbit. Quick tip. A rabbit is a soft target, just run it over.

Welcome aboard huntnut.

Yes deer etc can cause a lot of damage at highway speeds, and make for a scary ride in the vehicle that's hit them as well. I was with a friend many years ago and when we hit a deer with his truck it sent us down a very steep and deep ditch. We were fortunate not to roll and we were'nt hurt but it was scary. Shocked
