Whether I shoot anything or not...I just plain enjoy being out there. Especially the country that Suz is hunting...The Great Northwest is hard to beat and the Three Sisters area is God's country.

That's the spirit.
And you might need a horse, I'll stick to my dog.
Add some good companion and who needs more to enjoy nature?
When hunting becomes "the more the better", maybe it's better to quit hunting and start working in a slaughterhouse...

So true Aloys...so true mate. That is what makes hunting so much fun and enjoyable.

Cheers, Vince

Aloy-sis has a way with words...He's so funny!!
Ok Ok I didn't go hunting today because when I got up this morning it was pouring rain, really pouring. I made coffee and got dressed for hunting but the rain was over-flowing the gutters and I had to clean them while it was raining and that was enough for me. I imagined myself out there on my hill under a tree tryin to keep my rifle dry when I decided to do something about it.

I made a rain coat for my rifle. My Marlin 30-30 has a wooden stock that you can't take even the hand guard off. When they made it they routed out the wood just big enough to clear the lower magazine tube. You have to slide it off the length of the tube. You could do that if the band holding the magazine tube and the barrel wasn't pinned to the barrel, but it is. So anyway if water gets down into the wooden hand guard you can loosen it and try and dab it out with a paper towel or something but you can't dry out the wood very well.

So I took a very cheap but new, never worn rain suit, and cut an arm off, measured it up to fit the rifle barrel and wood, got the sewing machine out and made a nice sleeve. I put a velcroed web strap around the muzzel end of it to keep it tight. Then I made a small flap that covers the bolt and magazine feed opening. Just put some button holes in it to keep it in place with the scope mounting screws.

I want to make another small flappy thing for a bolt rifle to keep the water from going into the magazine. It has a plastic stock so don't have to worry about getting it wet so much.

Great stuff Suz...they saw that necessity is the Mother of invention.

I am suitably impressed mate...so much so that I might just have a look at something similar for my Mod 94.

Suz, I have a question: are you now looking for a new, 1-armed boyfriend or is your Jon going to lose 1 arm soon?
Here we have a saying: "costing an arm and a leg", what do you get for 1 arm in your state?

last question to stay on the safe side: do you think your Jon could find Belgium? Smile

and I'll see if I can find a picture of Marijke's Marlin, she put some camo bandage round her barrel. That's also good protection and it makes no noise...

No one armed boy friend, but a single minded one would be nice. That gives me an idea...... I could pack that one-armed rain coat for Jon to take on his next over-nighter!! "Oh did I pack that one in? Sorry." What's funny is he would wear it too, and just make excuses.

Well I looked at the photos you sent me and actually I used to do that on mine but it just doesn't cover as well as my new patented, super brainy, very well conceived rifle rain coat. Thanks for the photos, Marijke must be a fine hunter too. You find her some bigger deer though, that one looks to be enough for lunch only.

Hey Vince! Mod 94....is that a Winchester or Marlin?

Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Suz...wash your mouth out...a Model 94 is THE lever action of all lever actions, otherwise known as the Jack Handle... manufactured by the greatest (or is that oldest) rifle manufacturing company ever......WINCHESTER.

Now, let's see how long it takes our mate 1895ss (a dedicated, confirmed Marlin owner) to wade into this argument. Stand by Bushy. Very Happy Very Happy Laughing

SCUUUUSE MEEEE!!!! Shocked
You might include me in the dedication of Marlins too!! I was just makin sure...the Winchester is a pretty gun and very Winchester looking but Marlin was undeniably superior to begin with; Cool

One of the drawbacks of theWinchester Model 1894 action in relation to its main competitors, the Marlin Model 336[7] and Marlin Model 1894[8], is that it ejects out the top of the receiver, unlike the Marlins, which eject to the side and have solid top receivers. The reason this is sometimes considered a drawback is that a top-ejecting firearm cannot mount a scope on top of the receiver, but instead must mount it either on the barrel in front of the receiver or offset to the side, degrading the usefulness and availability of a scope.

Winchester alleviated the top ejection issue with an angular ejection change that was implemented on later model rifles (early 1980s), which eject empty shells out at an angle between the original Winchester design and the Marlin design.

I rest my case.......step in, any moment Bushy....sheeesh

Haha Haha Haha Haha Haha Haha Haha Haha

Wish I could get fish to bite that well.

My Winchester Model 94 is an older top eject model, and yep...I have a scope mount in front of the action (use my Tasco Red Dot on that mount), and I have a scope offset to the left hand side of the action...but it is every bit as accurate out to the effective range of the 30.30 as a top mounted scope.

I accept that Marlin do in fact produce a quality product...not convinced it is any better than the Winchester though. Very Happy Very Happy

The Winchester is smooth and so good looking. Can you imagine John Wayne carrying a Marlin? And the Marlin lever gets sticked on times when you cannot afford it...
But since at least I know 2 girls carrying a 30/30 Marlin, I guess... (and this one I better keep to myself, I could awaken the bushmen Smile )

I've got a Winchester 94 in .44 Mag and a Marlin 1894 in .45 Colt. I've used both in Cowboy Action Shooting with good (for me!) results. I decide to make the Marlin my CAS gun because I was shooting .45 Colt handguns and it carries more rounds. The Winchester became a brush gun for deer with a "scout" scope mounted. I think its the first picture I ever posted on here.

I know I'm being baited into making a comment on here. I recognize all the hints. Laughing

Well I have already posted photos of my "Jack Handle". So I won't again.

I will only say that my ol' Jack Handle is older then Suz and will out shoot her marlin. Unless her's will turn in 1 5/8" three shot groups at 100 yards with iron sights I've won. Very Happy

First time posting a photo?. This is one of the easiest site to do so. Still, nice job...You need to post more.

Bushy, I made a confusing statement. I've posted a bunch of pics on here but the pic of my 94 was the first one I posted after I'd joined this great group just over three years ago.
