No stovey, this isn't about bird hunting. Wondered if anyone had seen a tool like this lately? I'd like to find one to use to shorten the barrel on one of my .22LLRs. Wheeler Engineering doesn't produce it anymore.

Nope...but looking at it, I don't reckon it would be too hard to manufacture one similar.

This is a hardened steel that is much harder than the steel used in a barrel so you can use a file on it and not worry about damaging it. Video's on how to use it are all over the web but can't find any for sale.

SJ, you don't have a friend with a milling machine? Or a teacher in some technical shool?
It's easier to mill straight than to file straight (and a good milling machine has smaller tolerances).
I would say I'll borrow you mine but I think it's about 100x to heavy for a decent transportcost.

One could also consider not to use a dovetail... think about how your tubemagazin is connected to the barrel and have a look at how Mauser put his aiming devices on a K98. Or how did Remington do this on a Nylon 66?

Aloys, I'll start looking for a friend with a milling machine in his home as a back-up. I'll have to buy a good dovetail bit.

What? Mad

Try David White at D & T Custom Gunworks (deersniper here). Maybe he can make a jig for ya or....D & T can simply do the whole job with perfect results. Shorten and recrown starts at 50$ for bolt actions. Shoot an e-mail to him and be specific. Tell him I sent ya. Very Happy

and cutting equipment is always expensive + you still need the equipment to use it.
So when it's for 1 dovetail and you don't have a friend working with a milling machine...

Thanks OV1. I'd wager he has had some practice. I'll have to decide how much I want to my sweat into this effort.

slim- unless yer dead set on DIY, contact David and see if he'll do it. Where he installed my muzzle brake you cannot tell where the bbl starts or the brake ends, can't even catch a nail on the junction. This guy's good.
