Went out for some duck and goose hunting and stopped by the local wallyworld and picked up 2 boxes of 12ga 3 1/2" hypersonic loads. Got out to the field to set up the blinds and decoys then waited till they came in.

I fired off the first shot and dayum near thought I blew my gun up, this load kicked as hard as my 340 wtby. It surprised the hell outa me and my hunting buddy, shot couple more rounds (I think it kicks harder then the wtby) and after we picked up our game to head home.

Is anyone else using these hypersonic loads?

Normally I reload my own shells but was lazy this time around.

No, but more important, did you get anything with them besides a sore shoulder?

Sounds like you have a pump. Here is someone else's experience and some links to product details.

1550 fps oz 1/8th steel #2 made by kent took out 2 canada geese with 3 shots this morning my shoulder is fine. 3" shell
friends using 3 1/2" shells say they boot but pushing 1 3/8 oz at 1550 you got to expect that.

Slim
Yes bought home some geese and ducks.

Elvis
The loads I used were 1 3/8 oz at 1700 which translates to 61 ft/lbs of recoil compared to 38 ft/lbs of non hypersonic loads, thats quite a difference for a 7 1/2lb pump gun.

the best darn gooseaholick I know uses 3" shells for the first 2 shots with the big boomers for going away shots. that way it doesnt hurt your shoulder (or wallet) so much. good to hear someone else out there hasnt gone over to the semi camp yet, harrington &richardson pump does the biz for this Kiwi.

Two Black Cloud BBB 3" ers followed by a 3 1/2 is how I roll too. Geese never had a chance...

I saw those new shells and will leave them on the shelf now. I had a similar experience in the Remington Sabot slugs. The Copper Solids are a winner and I use tham a lot - The Core Lock Ultra were faster and flatter so I thought I would try them---- Man I do not hate my self enough to finish shooting that box of slugs. about broke my shoulder on the first shot... tried one more to be sure... yup.. way more punch than I like. Still have the other three shells in the ammo locker.

I've been wondering about those Remington Hyper Velocity steel shot loads. I bought 2 boxes of 3" 4's and 2 boxes of 3" 2's and have yet to shoot any of them. I guess I will one day when I get a chance to get to the patterning board...

I shoot a Remington 11/87 and my own steel shot loads. For wood ducks, I shoot a 7/8 oz. load of #3, a 7/8 oz. load of #1 for mallards and a 7/8 oz. load of "T" steel for Canadian Honkers. These loads run @ a speed of 2,000 fps., have very mild recoil and kill well to a full 60 yds....

Why I bought those Remington loads - I still don't know. I may just use them for crow hunting Very Happy ....

One more thing I would like to add as far as shooting these hypersonic loads,
while they are great for long range, the recoil is not for the faint hearted. Using my 870 at 7.5lbs with hypersonic 3 1/2" shells slams to hard for my liking, I would like to keep my shoulder as well as my retinas attached to me for awhile. Until I get a shotgun that weighs 10lbs or more, I'll stick with my reloaded shells thankyouverymuch. Very Happy

A standard one ounce load @ 1300 fps generates approximately 1640 ft lbs of energy @ the muzzle.

Remington's new 1 3/8 ounce load @ 1700 fps generates approximately 4550 ft lbs of energy @ the muzzle. wtf

As was stated earlier, it'll sell for a while. The recoil junkies will swear by it, everyone else will swear at it as I have. Smile Example is my 340 wby has around 35lbs recoil for a 9lb gun where as the my 7.5lb shotgun has around 61ft lbs recoil......Big difference.

And is it great for a long shot? I believe that when I want a tighter pattern I have to reduce the speed (less powder), make the shotcolumn shorter (less contact with the barrel), use round shot and do everything to keep it that round while it passes the barrel (= use filler).
So for me high speed and heavy loads are for short distances... often high speed in combination of a full shoke makes a wide shotcolumn because it's overshoked.

Aloysius
These loads are for 45 and 50 yards plus and according to some gun writers, shots out to 75 to 80 yards is no problem. I'll stick with my reloads that use normal 2 3/4" and 3" inch loads. I have never had a problem getting geese or duck out to around 30 yards with 2 3/4" loads, there are some magazines already making it out these new loads (field & stream) like its an elephant gun.
