Dang Aloysius, I would say you pretty much got the spectrum covered for hunting anything from gophers to elephants with your ensemble of firearms. Very Happy Very Happy

.30-06 is King and .30-30 is the Squire...The .22 is the "good serf".

I agree with yah Bushy, when handloaded the /06 is just about a do anything cartridge, I still have about 100 of the barnes 250gr sp that should take care of most things with imposing bulk and bad temper. Smile 30/30, well enough can't be said about that round, more people have put meat on the table in the last 100 years with the 30/30 than any other cartridge.

One more thing I would like to add, it seems in the last 25 years or so that game animals have apparently gotten tougher and hence require magnum size cartridges according to a lot of gun writers. It seems that they all forgot the most important thing, IT'S SHOT PLACEMENT THAT COUNTS", you hit a game animal in the boiler room and it's pretty much down for the count.

Ok enough rambling.....

Agreed !!!

Considering that nearly everything that breaths has been killed with a .22 I'd have to say it's the ultimate. Shocked

I'll stick in a vote for the 7mm (.280 Rem), just because I can! That was the first "big game" cartridge I got. Well, after the .45--70...

I wouldn't use brake cleaner near anything you're heating if I were you matey. It can break down & produce phosgene gas & that's a potential killer.

Ok, so I bagged my first deer with a borrowed 30/30 lever action; the next couple with a .35 Rem, and after that a couple with a S&W model 39 9mm - the only firearm I had at the time (both were shot at under 30 feet). After that, hunted for years with a Ruger .44 revolver.

I still love my .300 WBY mag, and it would be the "last gun standing" if I had to sell off everything else. The deer haven't gotten any tougher. I just love shooting that cannon.

But you guys are right - the 30-06 is probably the most versatile cartridge out there.

This is why I have more than one gun. Just like I have more than one screw driver and hammer. Aloys had it right, guess the .30-cal isn't so "ultimate" after all, just the freedom to use what ever caliber you want.
