I've found it's the same out here in Australia...the entitlements are there, but if you don't know about it you can't ask if you are entitled. On top of that unless you actually ask for it, they won't tell you about it or give it to you...and then you have to prove entitlement.

Bit suspicious here. Seems to me that the Navy would have told me this at the class on converting from military to civilian life.

Not necessarily mate, it really depends on the political and economic climate at the time. We had similar "separation" seminars, however there were things we weren't told about, but we were told to do our own research on entitlements because each and every case was different.

OK. so I finally got in touch with a friend who works with the SSA, and yes I forgive him for being a member of a criminal organization. and talked about this supplement. Pete told me basically the same thing that is posted on the SSA web site:

"If your active military service occurred;

From 1957 through 1967, we will add the extra credits to your record when you apply for Social Security benefits.

From 1968 through 2001, you do not need to do anything to receive these extra credits. The credits were automatically added to your record.

After 2001, there are no special extra earnings credits for military
service."

Damn, I was hoping I was gonna get rich. Oh well, back to the doggy treats for snacks.
