Several years ago, my dept had several sig sauer P229's blow apart that looked almost identical to this one. Cause was determined to be over pressured ammo. Not from too much powder, but from bullet setback upon chambering the ammo. The feed ramp would push the bullet way back into the case causing way too high pressures.

You bring up an interesting point that is often over looked!!!
Whenever I'm setting a crimp this is one of the checks/test I preform. I'll cycle the same round at least 3 to 4 times and measure OAL to see if it has changed.

I have discovered the same thing with my Sig 220 and factory ammo!!!
the last batch of duty ammo that was issued to me was federal 55gr sp in 223. While qualifing was going on i discovered that some of the rounds had the bullet pushed back so far, the point was even with the case mouth. Shocked The range master ordered new ammo, hornady plastic tip bullets now.

Fires every time too...no KB's or sizing "issues".

Nice groups at 25y offhand. Ragged holes from a rest. 15y drills on multiple, hanging 4x4 cards. Nails 'em big time. Very Happy Fencing

Made in good ol' Flag since 1911.

Well gentlemen thanks for the input so far it is a learning Experience as always. I am always open to anything you ALL say because I can learn from it ad then pass it on, "somebody has to make a mistake or have something go wrong, then they pass on the information, why, because we don't have enough time in our lives to make all the mistakes". You guys are great I should post more often.... Just got the gun (whats left of it) back from the smith my curiosity was peaked by the suggestions. Going through son's ammo box found that all the reloads were fired, by the way 16grains 800x 230gr nosler JHP Avg Velocity 1696fps. The round that failed
according to the gunsmith was due to "overpressure" causing a catistrophic failure of the case....YES it was a factory round (remington) as all the ammo we reload is in Winchester cases and are roll crimped the factory round was also a 230gr JHP. Best thing out of all of this I guess is the replacement gun. Model M1991 A1 Colt 45 ACP what a nice shooting pistol to me its a step up My other pistol is a Ruger Model 528SS in 357 Mag. As I said earlier thanks for all the input. Thanks about the tip on the camera forgot it had a macro setting...duh

800X @ 16gr under a 230 JHP.

That's a friggin' hot tamale man if it aint a compressed load.

Like they say on Mythbusters...."well there's yer problem!"

I'd freak if that happend to my Ruger 44... cuz its a nice gun, tragic end.

+1. dang thats a very hot load. My manual states 15.5 max with a 200 gr bullet and 14. something with a 240. The trigger puller is very lucky. Just curious, what reloading manual are you using?
