I am a black powder cartridge reloader. I have been doing this now for little over 2 years now.
Are there any people here that do this? Anyone with some info or is anyone needing some info on this subject?
If you are interested in this just ask and I will help the best that I can.

jes66,
Glad to see you here. What blackpowder cartridges do you load? I shoot a few muzzleloaders and have toyed with the idea of shooting some blackpowder rounds. I have a .45/70 H&R trapdoor rifle and that is a relatively weak action so blackpowder would make sense. I would appreciate your thoughts. All the best...
Gil

Gil,
I load 45/70 gov. and 50/140 sharps. I sometimes load for my Ruger 45 ong colt. A friend of mine also has a trap door and he is the one that got me invovled with black powder cartridge. I have loaded many differant rounds for the 45/70 but my best responding load is 65 grn. pyrodex select into winchester brass with a std large rifle primer. on top of the powder I have a .030 card wad, sometimes I use vegetable fiber wad but get the same responce, and on top of that a 500grn. lead round nose bullet that I cast myself from a Lyman mold ( 457125 ).
I am still playing with my Rollingblock 50/140 Sharps round.
My friend who has a trapdoor uses the same round but replaces the lead with a 450grn flat nose which he casts from a Lee mold ( 90375 ).
But the thing is to remember is that not all rifles are the same.
Since your rifle has sort a weak action, I would give Black Powder a try.
There is nothing better than the smell and the looks you get when you are at your local range.
All I can say is give it a try and if you need any more info feel free and I will help the best that I can.

jes66,
Thanks for the comprehensive reply. How do you clean your cartridge arms after shooting balckpowder? I have thought about using blackpowder loads in a .444 Marlin and a .45/70 Marlin. I am about to cast some bullets in the backyard if the rain holds off. All the best...
Gil

Gil,
Any good Black Powder cleaner works well, Thompsons Number 13 Bore cleaner is one that I use at the range between a 5 shoot string of test rounds but any good cleaner will work. As soon as I get home though I tear the rifle down and use Novum Solutions Blue Wonder Gun Cleaner ( www.novumsolutions.com ). It chemically cleans removing lead and powder that is left. Then oil as normal, But as I have said use any good Black Powder cleaner, even the one you use on a muzzleloader. Your main thing is to make sure you get the powder residue out, as we all know Black Powder is a little corrosive or harsh on steel because of the sulfer.

I reload 45-70 BPCR and use Windex with vinegar as a cleaner. It really works great and is cheap. WARNING: There is also Windex with Amonia DO NOT USE THIS. Use only the one with vinegar. PJ.H.
