Here in Arizona, we can shoot blackbirds all year long, no limit. Same with varmints, rabits & coyotes.
Keep it coming...

Headshot on a Crow:

Cal: .220 Swift
Bullet: 50 grains Hornady V-Max moly
Range: 275 yards

Mauser

Yes, the shot I will always remember. When i was about 12 years old I used to take pot shots at flying crows from our feedlot as they flew over the back pasture. The distance was about 150 yds and I was using a single shot 22 with shorts. After seeing several crows drop about 8 feet and then fly on, one evening a crow fell like a stone to the ground. Upon examination, it was revealed that the hit was centered in the crows eye.

Shocked

Beleive it or not,

Well done that man, or should I say boy... Laughing

Crows have to be one of the hardest birds to shoot.....buggers can see/sense the bullet coming and duck Shocked ....very frustrating.

Cheers,

I am new to the forum, and new to varmint hunting. I have a .270 that I have used for deer and antelope. It will touch 3 90 gr HP at 100 yd. I have not tried it on paper beyond, due to limited range. I now have access to a 500 yd range and am going to do some experimenting. Would a .270 with 90 gr HP be a viable long range round? It is point blank +/- 3" to 305 yds with a 130 gr. Would I be better with a more conventional PD round, i.e .223, 22-250, .204?

Any advise would be appreciated.

Thanks.

The 270 will do well at long range. People use the others for reasons like less recoil, cheaper to shoot, higher velocity and better varmint bullets. Unless you are in desperate need of a new toy, work with the 270 for a bit and then get the toy of your choice. Very Happy

Welcome,

Keep the 270 as a heavy gun and.... aw shucks, get a new .224 gun for medium to close range. I would look for a 22-250, 223 or 222.

I agree. I like the 22KHornet and the 223 remington for my Varmint work, the 243 is a good one too. Very Happy

I wouldn't rule out the 204. It does right well out in the squirrel, prairie dog & coyote wars. Very Happy

22-250 will allow you to see POI at long ranges due to the minimal recoil, as will any of the smaller .22's. I occasionally have an issue with my .243 Win, but it's MY problem , NOT the guns or the calibers. The .308 Win is also a good long range varmint cal, with just slightly more recoil than the .243, but with the ability to be loaded to "near 30-06" performance.

And when the Varmints get larger, with a 243 or 308, you need not worry about injuring larger game! I always take a heavy Varmint rig (243 or 308) with me when hunting just for that reason. Very Happy

Most recent and one of the only times I have taken the time to GPS messure a shot.

325 yads w/ 204 ruger

204 ruger has very little recoil, you can literally watch the varmit vaporize threw the scope. this is a varmiters dream caliber.

Longest shot was a rockchuck at 572 yards, lasered. I was shooting at him before and went back to the close ones(440) then I gave it another SWAG and nailed him. Rem. 700 BDL 22-250 and a 52gr. berger with leupold 4-12. This year i got one at 520 with a Rem. 700 VSSF 22-250 and a 52 gr. berger with a leupold 6-18.
