At that price it'd be the S&B every time.

At the $500 level I'd look at Cameraland NY's clearance list for an ex display model Zeiss or Leupold.
There's a Conquest 3-9x50 there for not much over $500.

Like a 20g to the face?

Millet, BSA, BUSHNELLLLLL!

Don't forget the really important stuff...like rings and bases, Grand Slams are pretty bomb proof and dirt cheap. My rifle aint all that and a bag of chips but my scope is HEAVY, the rifle's light, that = recoil. My Grand Slam bases and rings have yet to budge after many rounds 300WM. Burris makes good rings too. Pass on any bases/rings made of allum etc...I made that mistake already..

Why not? They are importing nice stuff now. Do some reasearch. I've seen the new stuff stand up to some pretty wicked shooting, glass comes from Japan like most of the rest etc...

I've heard that the use of Japanees glass has become less and less as their optic prices have gone up and up. Only the very expensive product lines still use it.

The best optical glass in the world comes from either Japan or Germany.

I hate to say this "I think chambered is right" that 6-18 or their 4-12 is pretty cool for a budget like that. I really like the lower powers for a 1 gun answer but I quit trying to use 1 gun about 20 years ago. Stovey I wouldn't try to talk anyone in or out unless I had first hand experience but this time I do. Brian had a b.s.a. and a lens rattled loose on his .30-"06, he sent it back got a second one ditto, third time around it wouldn't adjust for elevation he gave up and got a Tasco world class and really likes it. I guess I am spoiled.

I have a Millet TRS-1 Mil-Dot 4x16x50 with side focus and illuminated reticule (10 brightness settings). It is a 30mm tube and comes with the front screw on sun shield. I mounted it on a Savage .223 10 XP Predator rifle using Weaver steel detachable rings and split mounts. Scope height is 2" above bore. Nice clear optics, smooth focus and zoom with external turret adjustments. The combination has been very accurate for me on paper. I haven't shot it in the field yet as our weather has been miserable all fall and early winter. Scope also came with lens covers and a cloth scope cover. I bought it from Frontier Firearms in Alberta and price was under $500 tax and shipping included.

Hey Mac, Frontier Firearms is in my city, Prince Albert Sask. I know the company well. The owners are stand up guys.

Well Stovie. Guess I can't really say much about the BSA scope as I have a "cheap" Barska 3X6X40 on my Winchester M290 .22.

I am glad to hear that they have improved the quality - I purchased a 6-24x40 IR mil -dot scope a few years ago and it was really only useful to about 10X much higher magnification than that and the light fade was like the clouds came in and made a sunny day overcast.

Short on money and badly in need of a scope I purchased a BSA Platinum 6X24 several years ago. Was very unhappy with it it would not hold POI (just in case I have the term POI used incorrectly, what I mean is that it would not hold a pattern), so I sent it back to BSA, they replaced it without any questions and the new one works great, so far.

This should not be construed as an endorsement of BSA, just my experience.

Yikes! That's a lot of known failures for BSA. I've heard good stuff about them and seen them working off the bench just fine.

Personally I've found good sucess with upper-mid shelf top name-brand stuff that goes on sale. There's usually something that's over-stocked or a held-over last-year's model for quite a subsantial savings at most if not all on-line retailers. Optics Planet, Amazon, Cabela's, et al.

I only recently got into glassing guns the past couple or three years and asking questions here put some issues I had to rest. But it came down to me so I did a lot of homework and comparo's, and, found that just before I pulled the trigger on a bargain another would pop up at around the same price on a top name-brand. I easily looked at over 300 scopes before I bought my last one.

What I've found/My advice (FWIW)? :
If you plan on running glass only, no back-up sights, invest in premium stuff that goes on sale, the very best you can afford, plus 100$- end of story there for a lot of reasons. A big game/long range hunt requires the best gear you can afford and easilly the object most prone to failure/damage is your scope. Also- invest in preimum rings and bases- stuff that's bomb-proof steel.

If you dont mind the prospect of a return on a non-premium scope for a bench-beater/plinkin'? Then the sky's the limit. I've seen all brands fail, none are immune to abuse either, also seen bargain brands clear as day and last for eons on others rifles. Go figure.
