Thanks for the walk down memory lane. Pick axe handles we called puppy pounders in the ME on UN duty.

Yes the current spotlight seems to be on Muslim, but they are like any other religion, have flaws..

Yup, as do political organizations who made up the majority of terrorist activity up until the last decade and a half.

There is a destinct separation of powers between the civilian forces and military for a reason and it is generally only in times of disaster, war or olympic games/g20 type senerios that the military is equipped with ammo in the public domain.

And even then, IF they were issued ammo in the first place (normally floods etc don't warrant it), it's a single magazine which is not allowed to be inserted into your firearm until ordered by your chain of command.

The troops in Toronto for the G20 for example (knowing a couple who were in uniform for it) were carrying an empty magazine in the rifle at all times.

We have our own bad side as Christians, Jesus only actually teaches to follow God's word as laid out in the Torah and help your fellow Jews who believe in the same God. We are probably the most blasphemist religion out there as we do not do as our "savoir" commanded, follow the laws as set out by his father, our God, in the Torah.

There are quite a few dark passages of what your supposed to do with your non-believing neighbors both with regards to attacking them at will, and forcing the women to become your wives, and the children as slaves.

Needless to say Mohammed, who was actually a very educated man, copied the then current religions of the area (including the Torah and New Testament but also now extinct religions from the region) to form his new bible, who he himself claimed was the same God as ours.

Abraham from the Bible is known as the patriarch of the Jewish people of today through Isaac, the SECOND son born to him and Sarah in their old age, in fulfillment of a promise from God.
Muslims claim descent from Abraham through his son (FIRST-BORN) Ishmael, born to Abraham and his wife's servant Hagar.

Jesus teaches to that you either live under the Law (Old Testament first 5 Books of the Torah written by Moses) or under Grace (New Testament or the Gospels written by the Apostles ). The Bible is not read in halves Old or New but as a complete book with both.
The Catholics also have the intertestamental period (apocrypha, deuterocanonical) this is the book of Macabees, Bell and the Dragon etc.

That is a view more aligned with Martin Luther's views, that one can live "under law" or "under grace" opinion.

Needless to say we don't follow his father's commands as Christians because it was deemed too difficult to covert the pagans of Europe if the Church had to convince them to follow all the rules as laid out in the Books of Moses. Hence the massive cannon law attached to Christianity, in the first half dozen centuries of Christian expansion in Europe.

However, I can quote verses till I am blue in the face from Jesus and his Apostles stating that they, and we, need to follow the word of God. That Jesus didn't come to destroy, or remove any of the word of God, but to expand on it.

I believe all the teaching of religion are good, the problem is a handful of individual pervert the teaching into evil.

I also believe that unless we are as old as Bushy and observe the happenings first hand, all the religious books writings are hearsay and should be taken as a work of fiction rather than law.
IMHO all the fantastic deeds of the "god(s)" or their offspring or relative or servant etc. portrayed not much different to some b grade hongkong kungfu movies..
At the era those religion books were originated, books are really rare, so are those that could master the archaic skill of reading and thus much revered and thus highly trusted,
and thus the writing become "The Words Of God"
It is sort of like "it is in the Wikipedia, therefore it is real and true"

I speak with my agnostic POV of course.

Had tea with Jesus many years ago. He mentioned having problems with a few of his followers too. He said that it would all take care of itself without his help. Never saw him after that...

All things being equal, The Christian Bible is still the oldest document translated into all or almost all languages. It was written by 40 or more authors by devine inspiration or guidance. It is the only book ever written that is self certifying. If not for Christains there would be no human rights in any nation today. It is a history of one family. If you read the Bible and try to be perfect under it then you are living under law and will be judged by law. Christ was the only human to have ever been perfect under the law, we cannot be and so his crucifixion ended all that he paid the price of sin for all mankind.

Now to switch gears, I left a comment on Facebook about Canadians (mercenaries) going over to help the Kurds with the war with ISIS what we should do about ISIS.

I said " They behead a Christian and we give them a meal of pork guts and eviscerate them" Sounds fair to me. Very Happy

Human rights pre-date Christianity by a couple thousand years. Ancient Iranian, Iraqi and Greek cultures had human rights long before Jesus showed up.

Human rights have actually gone backwards since.

Case and point, until the late 18th century, with the American and French revolutions claiming that human rights are "universal", Christian nations were very much against the notion. Unless it worked for the benefit of Nobility. Hence the Magna Carta for example, being less about the commoner, and more about the nobility keeping their power and keeping the King under check.

Heck even in the last century, if you say something "wrong" you used to be branded a communist, or more recently a terrorist. And suddenly laws meant to protect you don't apply.

Do we have human rights? It's debatable when the government can revoke them at will.

Human "rights" are more like a drivers license, it's a "privilege" not a "right".
