Read an interesting article in the Australian Sporting Shooter magazine today. The article written by Thomas Tabor was on a New Zealand produced cartridge annealing machine called Annealing Made Perfect, or AMO for short.

It looks like a good piece of kit and is well worth looking at if you are looking for a machine to anneal cartridge cases.

Price if the unit is unknown, but if it is as good as Tabor says, it may well be good at any price.

I saw that induction unit in operation and it gets brass way too hot. The brass was coming out glowing cherry red. I decided to build my own. It is still in the design stage but it will handle brass from .223 to 3006 from a hopper that holds 200 or more cases. I have to work out the motor pulley size for the proper heating time but once that is done I will give away the parts list and instructions to construct it. I figure I will have about $30 total into the machine. I have spent a total of about 20 hours in the design to this point and it looks like just about anyone could build it.

It seems a little slow but good otherwise. Then the price; $995? Not for me.

My propane torch works quite well thank you very much. I just don't anneal that many cases. Mostly .308

I think Skippy's unit is too complex and high tech. Since the heating drum and the loading spool have to operate at the same speed I decided to use one motor and get rid of the power supply and speed control by using an AC synchronous motor. It turns at exactly 12 rpm and is controlled by the frequency of the AC current. My unit will have the heating drum and loading spool using the same size pulleys and a slightly smaller pulley on the motor to give the cases just 5 to 7 seconds in the flame. The motor needs one size of puller for 60 Hz and a slightly larger on for 50 Hz.
On 60Hz 120 volt the motor turns at 12 RPM which is 5 seconds per revolution but there is a time interval where the cartridge falls from the drum and then the next cartridge drops in. So the motor pulley has to be smaller to give a longer time in the flame.
Mine will have one switch to turn the unit on and off and no other electrical controls that can fail or need adjustment. Load the hopper, turn it on and let it process 200 cases or more then you shut it off. Reload the hopper and repeat. I have thousands of cases to anneal.

Priced out at $1300 CDN way, way, too expensive for the few hundred cartridges that I would be annealing. I'm like Bushy, I'll stick to the propane torch for the .308 and 22-250s

Very interesting annealing machine. I particularly liked the systematic process they have defined down to the specific cartridge and brass type. This is a precision annealer.
