gelandangan, thanks for the chuckle!
They never disclose that they have to build a fossil fuel plant that runs at idle to pick up the load when the wind dies down. I've heard it takes 20 mph winds to generate full power.

The South Australian government in its wisdom closed the states only coal fired power station, their solution, buy power from 2 neighbouring states. The perfect storm took out a few kilometers of the now important hight tension lines totally shutting down the states electrictity grid, a statewide blackout ensued for over a week.
They had ignored all engineering advice on this and created a single point of failure in a multilayered redundant system. Absolute geniuses.
All this in an effort to look "green", thats about the colour of most meat in the non operational fridges after 4 days.
Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large groups...

slimjim...the issue is two fold with wind...it works in a certain band of wind strength....too much is a s bad as too little (although a clever fella would build variable picth props to conteract that)we are currently...no pun intended...seeing a big push for electric cars......they have short memories, less than 20 years ago we had a big snow storm and most of south canterbury was without power for quite some time...places were 6 weeks before they got it back.
there is a photo doing the rounds of a diesel powered generator for charging cars...somewhere in the land of OZ.
