Hunted with my brother in MN earlier this week on a gorgeous day. We had both only walked about a 100 yards when we each got one. Then over the next 2 1/2 hours we saw about 25 squirrels. We "only" managed to get 13 of them (we each missed two, so it could have been 17).

We got the usual bag of Grays and Fox squirrels, but I also got a all black one. Never seen a black one in MN or AZ, and neither had my brother that has hunted all his life in MN.

Anyway, just writing to say it was fun, the weather was perfect and the hunting was great.

In two days I'll be hunting squirrels in AZ, but we don't get nearly as many as in MN. Actually, we always end up with more cottontails than limb rats-about twice as many.

All the squrrials I'm used to seeing are the black ones normally not many of any other type all the way up here. Perhaps they are migrating south ?? Confused

The must be moving south. I have met guys from Michigan and Ohio that had taken bLack squirrels before. I hope the keep it up, makes for an interesting hunt seeing three types of squirrels.

Just got my first three last weekend here in NH. I don't get out like I would like to but the Hornet did its work just fine. Course if you don't do head shots not much left to chew on.

Squirrelbait,
NH has some fine squirrel hunting as very few people hunt them in the granite state. I used to go in the fall when the leaves were changing. The squirrels and blue jays would fight over acorns in the tree tops, you could hear a fight for about a quarter mile. The squirrel would be so busy chasing the jays that he would not see me. Just slip over under his tree and pop... into the pot goes Mr. Bushytail.

Swampfox, right now I am trying desparately to get some venison in the freeezer----it ain't working out yet. So the squirrels are kinda back seat.
With the TC encore I can switch between the 243 and the Hornet pretty fast. While sitting waiting for Joe Big Buck to show himself I have had gray squirrels almost jump on me thinking I was part of the damn tree. It really is a hoot. Course then I get frustrated not seeing the deer, get back to the car, change the barrel and go out and pot Mr. Gray.
I don't shoot unless they are on the ground or have the tree truck behind them.......its never too far to someones house.

Arizona Hunter, I grew up in Iowa. Boy did we take a lot of squirrels and cotton-tails. I never did deer hunt until after college and USMC.
I wish we had the fox squirrels and cotton-tails here in NH we had back there. That was some great small game hunting.
