On the used shelf gathering dust in a nearby town was an H&R top break, long barrel in 38-55 Win. And, it was barely used and at a bargain price. It followed me home.

What a fun rifle, and very accurate with cast bullets, too. In fact, I bought it primarily to develop cast bullet loads and haven't tried jacketed at all. Afterall, this is the cartridge that is the parent for the 32 Win Spl, 30-30, 25-35, etc. Ah, heritage.

Iron sights consist of a rear Williams peep and a target style front. Centering the sights is almost a natural experience, recoil is next to none and I am impressed with its 100 yard accuracy.

I don't know if I will ever take into the field for hunting, but, using it on prairie dogs this season is appealing, at least those under 100yds.

Thanks, H&R!

That is a great find. For some time now I have kept my eyes open in case I come across one in good condition at gun shows etc but not yet. It's a great old cartridge.... enjoy. Smile

Handloader,

Hope you enjoy the rifle, I've got a box of Winchester Super-X (I think) in 38-55 here, my dad bought it when he bought a commemoriative Winchester lever action many years ago and never took the rifle out to shoot it yet so the rifle is sitting there in its box unfired. Smile

Handloader,
I got to shoot a Marlin last year in 38-55. As well as being fun to shoot, it was also very accurate at 100 yards with open sights. I thought it would make an excellent short range deer rifle.--tr

Oh my, Dimitri! To me, an unfired firearm is like a virgin wife. When I buy a gun, new or used, shooting it becomes a prime priority. This give fulfillment to the firearm and me.

So, grab the ammo and take that Wichester shooting!! Very Happy Ok, take your grandpa, too.

Handloader,

Thats funny Laughing My dad has had that rifle sitting there for years (since 1983 when it came out and he bought it), don't think he is going to let anyone shoot it anytime soon. Laughing

PS. I'm willing to bed that virgin wife analogy doesn't apply when your "little girl" gets together with a guy huh ?? Very Happy Very Happy
