URL - Uniform Resource Locator

A website address is its URL.

An URL is basically an internet address of some object, whether its an entire page or just a single image or file. This is very similar to how your home and street address works.

Your come computer actually does have an address, but its usually dynamic in that it gets assigned an address when you connect to the internet. You can pay extra to get a fixed address that never changes but most people have dynamic addresses.

Your computer would not have a usable URL address atm. To access images and files over the web from other computers, those files and images need to be uploaded to a webhost that has a fixed address and therefor URL.

There are plenty of places that will host images or files for you for free, or you can pay to have even better support in file hosting. HuntingNut allows free hosting of images and if someone had a need, I could also host files in a limited fashion. Putfile.com is a better free solution though.

What specifically are you trying to do? Are you trying to upload a picture from your home computer somewhere?

Thanks for the elaboration on the URL Dallan.

I knew basically what it was, but nothing beyond that. You have now educated me. Thanks mate.

Holy crap!

Thanks Dallan, that's the best explanation I've ever seen on URL's. I actually think I understand it now.

To take it one step further, internet addresses are actually 4 groups of 3 digit numbers, ranging from 0-255. 192.168.000.001 would be an example of an valid ip address.

Think about a piece of regular mail (Post for our aussy people ;)), it finds you because within your home address it has Country, State, City, Street address.

Computer IPs are roughly the same way, the first group of number specifiys a region, the next group specifies a sub region, the next a smaller region etc etc.

Now, when you type in "www.huntingnut.com", "google.com" or something else, that textual name is send to a special server called a DNS server, or Domain Name Server. That server looks up "huntingnut.com" from the offical world list of internet names, and sees that HuntingNut.com really exists at 208.76.80.141, it then sends this info to your computer to begin routing any page requests there.

If you are curious about this, in windows from the Start Menu select "RUN" and within the box enter "CMD". This will bring up a dos window. Next type "Ping HuntingNut.com", this will send 4 quick packets to huntingnut.com and return the amount of time it took to get there and back and will show you the IP address.

For kicks, and really this is a good thing to know to diagnose broken web pages, you can also trace the route of an internet packet to any website. From the same dos window type this: "Tracert huntingnut.com". This will show you every computer your packet goes through on its way to huntingnut.com... its remarkable how fast these packets are sent around. If you ever cant get to a website, that it appears down, try running tracert and it will show you just where the connection is failing.

The world is running out of IP addresses so there will be a new standard soon that will be 6 groups of 0-255 values to define where a physical comptuer really is.

WOW...that is awesome Dallan. Once again I have learnt something. I knew about the series of numbers for an IP address, but I had absolutely no idea what it all meant.

Thanks for the info on pinging and tracert mate. I will certainly be having a look at that.

Yup, they are running out of IP addresses but arn't they sort of "streamlining" the new IP6 protocol over the IP4 protocol so most people wouldn't even notice ?? Confused

Dimitri
