Back to the turkey hunt. The kind of turkey hunt in this neck of the woods is obviously not to just go kill a turkey. It is accomplished on public land, as opposed to private land in a wildreness setting. The hunt often gives you the opportunity to see a host of other game animals, bear, deer, elk, and predators. I've had bears fall out of trees right in front of us while calling in a gob. It is an exciting and fulfilling hunt that offers you the opportunity to hear a gob sound off from the roost and then come in strutting. Yes it is a rather physical hunt and not for anyone who isn't in pretty good shape. For the guide, it involves locating, putting the birds to bed, and a host of rather secret methods known to only the most acomplished. Not at all like you see on the hunting shows. Most don't know that the birds are put to bed at sunset, or even how that is accomplished. Even the locating is rather interesting to an individual not educated on this type of hunt. Its a very magical hunt in that the hunter finds their self amazed as to how I have seemingly arranged the events by incorporating methods to achieve this awesome experience. Certainly a hunt of a life time that many will spend big bucks to experience year after year. I'm sure any manner of turkey hunting is fun and exciting, but I promise an experience that will leave you with a feeling like no other. Unfortunatly I'm pretty much booked for the up coming spring season. If you are fortunate enough to draw an Arizona tag I might be able to do that hunt.

You guys have some nice big white tail in Iowa Vint. I lived in S.D. for about 7 years and will not forget any time soon the monster W.T. deer in that part of the country. All we have for W.T. is the couse. About 60 lbs. of animal, enough for a few steaks if you skin carefully and place your shot well. My best wishes for a fulfilling and sucessful hunt! Make sure to give us the story when your back.

OK GB....this is way off topic for this thread so maybe it is best answered in a new thread...however...what do you mean by "putting the birds to bed????

Oh, here's another question to ponder, and this relates to versatility. If you were encountering a mean ole brown bear intent on doing you permanent damage and you could grab your 7RM or the '06 next to it, your choice of bullets, which would you prefer? Why?

To hell with either.

1st choice: Marlin .45-70 w/ 350g North Fork or 460g Cast Performance WFNGC.

Me.....I'd be grabbing any and all firearms I could get my hands on...as well as my running shoes and truck keys !!! Very Happy

But I agree with Coyote_Hunter_. Even though I've never even seen a bear in the woods, let alone hunted them, the 45-70 with a big heavy projectile seems like a more logical calibre to use on something higher up the food chain than me. A bit like the difference with someone throwing a marble or a house brick at ya...I reckon I know which one is going to do more damage.

My reasoning here is from reading about big game hunting worldwide, especially Africa where pretty much everything over there is higher up the food chain and hungry, and the calibres and bullets that are the norm and are produce the goods. I ain't going to argue with good results.

Handloader,

Between the 7mm Rem Mag and the 30-06 I got to say I'd pick up the 30-06 cause it better well be a M1 Garand rifle!

No matter how heavy a 45-70 is, with a M1 Garand you can practically shoot as fast as you can pull the trigger with proper aiming, that means a possible of 8 150 gr pills to stop the bear instead of a single heavy 45 caliber slug. Laughing

Just saw this thread and thought I'd add my two cents.

First, I shoot a 308 Win, .30-06 and .300 Win Mag, 7mm Rem Mag and others. My 7mm RM and 160g bullets ahve taken more game (mostly elk) in the last 25 years than all my other rifles put together, and has done so cleanly in all but one case (the problem was the bullet) so I'm somewhat biased.

I lilke them all. Give me a good bullet and the only difference I'm concerned with is effective range. The .300 Win Mag wins that category, followed by the 7mm RM, .30-06 and .308 Win in that order.

Took two cow elk with the .30-06 this year but the 7mm RM has killed more game (mostly elk) than all the others put together.

This question really opens a can of worms. At that range I don't think its going to matter between those 2 choices, but, I would go for the 7 mag. knowing the enormous degree of hydro shock and penetration delivered by a 3750 fps. Barns projectile. In one side, and out the other, leaving a massive hole where the lungs once were. The manuel has a load with the Barns showing just under 3700 fps but I'm personally getting an average of 3756 fps. With the 7 mag shooting a 120 grain bulet I'm getting 3746 foot pounds of energy. The 30-06 with a 165 grain bullet will deliver 2976 ft. lbs. of energy at just under 2900 fps.
