Hodgdon will soon distribute VV powders and availability will become more consistent. It is really good stuff. I've used VV in some match rifles and handguns in following the lead of many top notch competitors.

How Hybrid 100 V can produce a couple of hundred feet per second more velocity, and at about the same wimpy pressures as Hodgdon reports for its "maximum" loads is passing strange to me.

Sniper, its not the peak pressure but the average pressure over time that determines the velocity. I drew an illustration of two pressure curves to try to explain. Its the area under the curve that matters. The left "Y" axis is pressure, the bottom "X" axis is time. The red curve peaks higher but the blue curve lasts longer.

Force on the bullet = pressure X cross sectional area of the bullet

Work = force X distance

If the average pressure is higher for the time the bullet is in the barrel you get more work which means more velocity.

Excuse the poor man's physics lesson! Wink

Bravo! Good simple explanation of this aspect of interior ballistics.

That's the onliest kind I can understand. Thanks! Very Happy

I think that means the new powder may be good stuff for a lot of calibers.

Happy to help!! With the old "crusher" type pressure measurements all you could really measure was the peak pressure. With the new electronic method they should be able to give us both peak and average pressures. Maybe we should start asking the manufacturers for that. Of course the numbers are only true for their test barrels but it would be interesting information.

I've mentioned this book before somewhere on this site but "Understanding Firearm Ballistics" by R.A. Rinker is a great source for shooters/handloaders. Simple enough to understand but has the math available if you really want to dig in to internal, external and terminal ballistics.

Sounds like Hodgdon is gonna take over the powder market !!!!!!!!!!!!

95% of what I burn is made by them !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They seem to have a grip on what reloaders want and need!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Looks like firearms related stuff is being bought up by investment groups? Look at the Remington/Marlin/Bushmaster deal.

Actually its one of the best things that can happen, as these investment groups dont want these companies to go under as they lose money and income if they do.

No Anti-Gun people in these investing groups, all they care about is a return of their investment as high as it possibly can be. Its all money to them not politics or the like.

Working for a bankrupt company and giving up a VERY LARGE percentage of my pay and benefits to one of these investment groups....................

I see things a little different !!!!!!!!!!!!!

I see what you mean, don't get me wrong, but I got to ask if the company was bankrupt and the investment group take charge and input money into the company would the company have been around for much longer anyways ?? Confused

Dimitri,

Yes they would.
They are a large global company that has figured out another way to put the screws to the hard working people of America, rid themselfs of pension obligations, close shops, and redo union contracts, just so they can move more jobs overseas.

I agree and when they own all the powder companies they can really put the screws to ya cause there's no competition and they charge what they want. They know you have no place else to buy so guess who gets bent over ???????????????????????

Dimitri ........ competition is a good thing !!!!!!!!!!
