Not really hunter.
The reason that I married her was that she had morals.

A dumb ass Iron Ranger is still smarter than most people in the world, so that didn't bother me either.

Dumb is relative.
Give me a "dumb" Ranger any day to smart Ohio boy. Laughing Laughing

Eric Very Happy Very Happy

And, in all reality, DUMB is NOT relative...

Dumb is subjective....

I can decide WHO I consider dumb...

So can you...

STUPID is actually measurable.... (don't ask how I know)...

Well the most common Iron Ranger is the boxes your supposed to pay at parks/campgrounds etc that collect fees without having someone around to collect them.

Then again I do believe where Eric comes from a Iron Ranger is someone from the Northern area of the state because there are a ton of iron mines there.

Anyone ever try those magnisum fire starters ?? I think they are the biggest waste of time in the world. The energy taken to scrap off enough to start a fire in my opinion is too much especially for the "survival"/"emergency" situations your supposed to use them in. Sad

Dimitri

They work a treat 'Mitri. My hunting buddy has one and if you use it correctly it starts a fire easily.

My daughter bought me a different type for my birthday last week and I have tried it on various mediums. The one she bought me is the type with the thick (1/4") flint, but no magnesium block. I tried it on:

* pine sawdust...took about three strikes to start it smouldering;
* paper...not much use;
* powdered Hexamine...about three strikes and it was burning; and
* a cotton ball heavily impregnated with petroleum jelly (Vaseline)...again, about three strikes and I had fire.

I intend trying it on a ground up pine cone...they are awesome for starting a fire because of the resin in them. I expect it to be about the best medium to carry...a bit like the Maya Dust they charge an arm and a leg for in the Outdoors shop.

So, do I think they are any good...sure do, in fact anything that will assist in starting a fire in a survival situation is bloody good value. Very Happy Very Happy

Cheers, Vince

Hey Joe,
An Iron Ranger is a Miner from Minnesota's "Iron Range"
There is a vein of Iron Ore that extends from Ely to Grand Rapids in Northern Minnesota.
Us Miners have a reputation of being tough, in your face, hard workers.
We also have a reputation of being very opinionated, and hard headed, with a view that people who were raised south of Duluth in Minnesota are a bunch of "southern idiots"

The longer that I live "south of Duluth", the more I realize that our view of "southern Minnesota" folks is dead on. Very Happy

Eric

Vince,

You make good points, and thats probably why its still kicking around in my pack eventhough I don't find scraping off the magisium all that fun or exciting.

Still prefer the "Indian" method though, fuel and a match/lighter. Laughing

Bushy,

Your right, I wouldn't believe it ether. ROFL

I love my magnesium fire starter, doesn't run out of fuel, doesn't quit working when wet, throw it in a pocket with a knife and you are good to go.
