What was the deer doing on his bicycle? Trying to take it? I'd hit him, too.... ROFL

Miserable buggers !!

Hey Tracks......do the First Nation people in Canada have "native" rights in regards to hunting?

Over here in Australia, the aboriginals have certain rights in regards to hunting traditional foods, so long as they use traditional means to hunt....although they still use whatever they fancy at the time. A couple of the animals they can hunt, but we can't, are Dugong and Green Sea Turtle. Both of these critters are sea critters, but I believe that there are also land based animals where they have the same privileges.

So....sharpen up ya spears and arrows....string ya bows, and get out there huntin' mate. Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Be careful though.....I have this memtal picture of Tracker bein' chased around his truck by a Polar Bear...just like the guy in one of the other posts in here. Laughing Laughing Laughing

Cheers, Vince

If they're "treaty" because native people fall into specific categories here and if your ancestors weren't around when the treaties got signed you're screwed. Treaty Indians have an "inherent" right to hunt, fish, or trap, so if it's an inherent right, I don't know why non-treaty Indians don't have it too. I guess the government only recognizes people who have signed treaties as real Indians. Inherent is supposed to mean that it supersedes the treaties...passed down since the beginning of time, God-given etc. And as 1895 pointed out a long time ago, a lot of them abuse that right, which to me is a real shame. I'm happy to say that the people I know and the people I hunt with only hunt for their own table and what they need (or I wouldn't hunt with them)

Non-treaty Indians and "Metis" (mixed blood, yours truly) don't have any special rights, but some of the provinces (each province controls it's own game laws) are willing to recognize Metis hunting rights if the Metis hunter is hunting around his home community and can prove that he hunts to support his family vis: traditional lifestyle. The only Metis organization in Manitoba that I could join (which proves to the government that I am indeed a Injun, lol) is so rife with political infighting and backbiting that I'd rather just go out and buy the same hunting licenses as any other Manitoban. I'm a little far south for Polar bears Vince, but I have a friend who was hunting up in Churchill about 20 years ago with a bunch of guys and a polar bear charged at them out on the marshes. He was the only one who had a rifle with him, they were goose hunting and all had 12 guages, he put 8 shots from a .30-30 into that bear's chest before it dropped. Conservation officers confiscated the bear.

Tracker,

I guess they'd rather see the meat rot than let someone eat him.

Your friend is lucky that they didn't confiscate his rifle and throw him in jail.

Cary

Well, the first four shots were what slowed the bear down, he charged from a long way out. my buddy said he was just reloading one at a time into the chamber and firing after that. The bear was about 15 yards from them when he dropped and my buddy said he was starting to drop bullets in the mud because his hands were shaking so bad.

Cary, the guy that did the shooting is a treaty Indian (check earlier posts) I told him he should have demanded the bear, so there could have been some legal wrangling if either side had pushed the point

Best part was there were I think six guys out on that trip and I knew four of them, they hooked up with the other two on the way. One guy is this huge guy and he's a real blowhard, mouthy and pushy and aggressive. He froze on the spot when he saw the bear coming turned pure white (this is an Indian dude, pure white is definitely not natural tone for him), they said he didn't move until about 5 minutes after it was all over. If my buddy hadn't brought his jack-handle this guy would definitely been a big pile of bear doo.
