Friday afternoon i had to go down to the federal building to take care of a few things, and was severly interrogated for a little over an hour after i passed through one of their (what i thought was a metal detector)
"POWDER DETECTORS"! Shocked wtf
Ok, i did go shooting that morning for just an hour, so that i do understand. Cool But it nearly scared the day lights out of me because i thought i may have forgotten to take off my pistols (CCW) before entering....which they were locked in the car, so i then thought it was the metal in my holsters (which i've never had a problem with that either) and it wasn't that.
So with all these things going on in my mind and while being escorted to the shake down room, i then was told "Sir, you have very high levels of powder on you and we have to investigate this matter further" and i said....well yeah, i went to the range this morning (although, me saying that didn't much matter because of their protocol).
With all of the questions and fortunately not a through search Shocked Cool i was released and went on my way Very Happy but that did scare the he11 out of me and i also got some advise....."don't go shooting before flying now, they might throw you down, cuff and shackle you, and rough you up a bit before they ask questions". Confused
Thankfully, i don't fly! Very Happy

Why did it take an hour to convince the law when you told us in two paragraphs? All the best...

If you take heart pills (nitro) it will set'em off too. Really what we need next is something that detects explosives, I hear there is a technique now involving neutron streams that detects it but its pretty expensive.

I once went shooting in the morning one time before a flight and forgot I had put some .22 rimfire shells in my pocket that I had dropped in the dirt, meant to throw them away when I got home... boy I about had a heart attack when I remembered it just as I was going through the metal detector. I tried to act as casual as I could and toss'd them in a garbage can.

Well, in there was repetitive questions about where was i, what range was i at, what's the phone number to the range, how often to i visit the range, why do i have a CCW, and so on, and so on. Confused I guess i failed to mention that. Cool

I use pearled sulfur to treat soil in ny job. It appears that sulfur (being a component of black powder) also triggers alarms. To make matters worse, I had been walking around on soil treated with sulfur, so the only thing setting off the sensors were my boots! They took my boots and locked me in a litle room for about an hour while they X-Rayed my boots to make sure they were not a bomb. Another helpful hint, if you walk around in one of the components of an explosive, don't wear your steel toed, steel shanked work boots. The fact that so much metal was showing up on the X-Ray was also giving them fits. Finally had to get another pair of shoes out of my suitcase and mail my work boots home.

Now I always change my shoes before going to the airport.

You know whats to bad. They knew your story was right with in 10 minutes of you telling it.

But in order to be good little Government workers protecting us from our selves it was required that you be held for a long period of time. This not only scared you it made them feel powerful. Lucky for us all, we don't have secret jails where they can put us and forget they have us. Unless of course we deserve it!
