Wow! My experience is at the opposite end of the spectrum. I've written many bullet companies I've found Hornady and Berger to be the best. On the other end of the spectrum has been Barnes who haven't respond to emails. When I wrote Hornady, the response came from Dave Emary, Hornady Senior Ballistician. Arrogant and elitist were farthest from reality. Dave was interested and genuine. He even said to write back at anytime. I've done that twice and he responded quickly and even included some personal experiences. He wasn't writing me back for business but as one hunting enthusiast to another.

Picked up the new powder after work and loaded 33 shells.

All loads for 30/30 using Hodgdon LVR as follows using model 336 marlin Zane Grey with Oal 2.550, Remington 170gr Core Lokt Bullets, rem 9 1/2 primer, once fired rem brass, neck sized.

From hodgdons web site along with my new hornady #8 book. There are some discrepancy between hornady and hodgdon, so I went with hodgdon. Each shell is loaded with lvr powder and a 170gr Remington core lokt bullets.

What I did was load 3 shells each from min to max in .3gr increment for the 30/30 and min was 33.0grs with light crimp to max of 36.0grs light crimp. The max according to hodgdon is 36.3gr compressed, hornady is 37grs according to the hornady #8 book.

So, weather permitting on Saturday I will be at the range and post results.

All loads for 30/30 using Hodgdon LVR as follows using model 336 marlin Zane Grey with Oal 2.550, Remington 170gr Core Lokt Bullets, cci lrp primer, once fired rem brass, neck sized. Cases were trimmed to 2.035". Bullets were light crimp at middle of cannalure.
Each load in .3gr increments from min to max with 3 shells for each load. Total of 33 shells. 50 yard target, Chrony was 15ft in front of muzzle. Temp was 56F, no wind, 20% humidity, overcast, baro 29.82". All charges weighed with scale. Had to use the 50 yard range
cuz the 100 and 200 were being used.

36.0 2280, 2310, 2290 E.S. = 30fps

And just for the heck of it, I also had a box of Remington factory loads 170gr and fired off 5 with highest at 1950fps and lowest at
1880fps.

Note: 36.3grs max for Hodgdon, 37grs max for Hornady's latest book. The Hornady #8 manual has LVR Maxing out at 37.0 gr. @ 2300 fps.
I'll stick with Hodgdon's figures. I shot 3 strings each and let the barrel cool for 10 - 15 minutes with chamber open before shooting
next 3 shot string. My best grouping was 3" thru open sights at 50 yards with the 35.1gr load. All bullets were weighed
and was 170gr +/- 1.2grs. Bullets were loaded one at a time as to not get the bullets in the tube magazine warm. Never had any problem
ejecting the cases after firing. Rifle was cleaned before trip out to range.

I find its hard to do load development with iron sights with 3-shot groups. I'm just not reliable enough to ensure the POA.

Slim, on doing this load development with a new powder I used Load from a disk which is an internal ballistic program. It steered me in the right direction for using these loads before I even hit the range.

This program looks interesting but it wouldn't help me achieve a consistent point of aim with iron sights to verify where my Optimum Charge Weight (OCW) was really at.
