I think I need one... Is this a custom job or is someone making it in production. The bbl. appears to say 500 S&W Magnum, but I couldn't see anything else in reguards to it.

It's a custom one-of-a-kind, jbird.

Joe, are you a metal fabricator? It looks like it would take some skill and talent.

My mom sent me the picture. She lives where barbecue was invented.

Vince, you are hilarious! The area of the southeastern US where my mom lives was cooking barbecue before Australia was even a prison colony. Laughing

And I don't think that Aussies really understand barbecue. You see, cooking over wood and coals is NOT barbecue. That's called "grilling", or in the case of a rotisserie set up, "roasting".

Real barbecue cooking involves a combination of basting while grilling over low heat over a long period of time to make sure the meat is cooked throughly while the baste and the smoke from the coals has a chance to impart its flavor to the meat. In fact, in the heart of barbecue country, the natives do not refer to the cooking devices as "barbecues" or "barbies", but rather "grills" because you can perform more cooking techniques on a grill than just barbecue.

One of the ways we can ferret out yankees is by what they refer to their outdoor cooking device as. Sly devils they are, they have not figured this one out for the most part.

Here it is: From an on-line encyclopedia.

To barbecue means to slow-cook meat at a low temperature for a long time over wood or charcoal. In America, barbecue (or BBQ) originated in the late 1800's during Western cattle drives. The cowboys were fed the less than perfect cuts of meat, often brisket, a tough and stringy piece of meat that required five to seven hours of cooking to tenderize. Other barbecue meats used were pork butt, pork ribs, beef ribs, venison and goat.

However, barbecue was not invented in America and no one knows who invented the barbecue. The word 'Barbecue' might come from the Taino Indian word 'barbacoa' meaning meat-smoking apparatus. 'Barbecue' could have also originated from the French word "Barbe a queue" which means "whiskers-to-tail." No one is sure of the correct origins of the word.

I'll have to take issue with that.

First, when did you ever see a cattle drive where cooky had 7 hours to cook anything? Second, I have seen a diary that's been in my father's family for close to 200 years that describes a barbecue, but not by that name. But it is the description of cooking a whole pig on a spit for a whole day while having the "servants" baste it.
