Does anyone know whether you can take a Bushmaster AR15a2 and put a 7.62mm upper on it?

Can't happen the magazines of the larger AR-10 series rifles is bigger then the ones for the AR-15's. Sorry Sad

There are AR-10 variants out there, not all are cross compatable in parts though. Each company developed their own and patented them. Smile

Armalite makes the AR-10
Bushmaster discontiuned theirs I belive.
DPMS makes their Panther LR-308
Knights Armament makes the SR-25 which Stoner himself designed.
Remington makes a AR-10 variant but its not for public sale yet was for military trials don't know where thats leading to.

You can get a AR-15 to work with the Russian 7.62x39mm rounds but personally I think thats alittle wrong chambering the AR-15 in that caliber. Confused

7.62X39 is possible and has been done.

They did that with 300 Whisper .. No other changes required, just the barrel and it works.

squirrelbait, I haven't seen anything on the conversion you mentioned, but, did find in the Bushmaster catalog a conversion for the 6.8mm SPC which is a 270 cal. It is the complete upper and includes one 26 round mag. For the A3 Type (BURA3B 16M468) @ $760.00 or for the A2 Type (BURA2B 16M468) @ $660.00. You can call them at 1-800-998-7928 for more info. This conversion would be practicle for hunting larger game. Commercial ammo available uses a Hornady 115 Gr. V-Max moving out at over 2600 FPS. Deer anyone?

Keep it coming...

The 7.62x39 upper is an old offering, see the SGW or Olympic Arms site below:

www.olyarms.com/?rootV...s=cal-conv

There are better conversions, however, the 7.62x39 upper offers some real cheap shooting.

And, you need not stop at 7.62! We have been playing with a 458 SOCOM on the AR15 format and this weekend it got First Blood on a coyote. Veeery interesting.
