So I did some computer math about the old IBM 350 HDD. You know the one with 4.4MB of storage space with 50 disks of 24 inches in diameter.

Lets say a current drive holds 320 GB (soon anyways) per platter/disk.

That's roughly 8.31GB per sq inch. Which means the old work horse could if built with today's HDD densities would hold 750TB (roughly) of HDD space.

That's 750,000GB or 750,000,000MB or 520,833,333 floppy drives or 1,071,428 CDs or 178,571 DVDs.

Shocked

Dimitri

When I first got into computers, during my hitch in the military, they were as big as pickup trucks!

You too Cary? I started when you had a type writter attached to a telephone and when you wanted to send you put the receiver on a craddle/transmitter and started typing...Think that was back in the late '60's. You dialed a number and waited for it to answer, placed the phone receiver on the craddle/transmitter and started typing...

Bushy, we are sure showing our age.

Something else most people don't realize. Those huge (as in size) computers only had about 14k memory! Even the smallest hand held calculator of today far surpasses that. Even computers from the late dos era (70s and early 80s) had no more than a 540k memory (if my memory serves me right). When they came out with the first PCs that had a meg of memory, I was in complete awe!!! We were using something that was available to only the military a year or so before.

Heck, I just about freaked out when I first touched an electric type writer in late 60s. I was used to pounding the keys to get the letters to type. If you accidentally touched another key, that sucker would type that letter. Because of that, I almost didn't pass typing class in high school (since they deduct points for incorrect words). We had to be able to type 12 words a minute and I came right in under the wire!!!!!!!! That test was a complete accidental passing grade. I was really glad to get out of that class.

Currently, I can burn out about 60 words a minute.

Not bad for an old fart!

Cary

Took typing in high School on mechanical typewritters too. Had one electric in the class room and we got a chance once a month to use it. Got to where I would pass on my turn. I hated the damn thing for the reason you stated. At least if you felt that you had pushed the wrong key on a mechanical you could change your mind and it wouldn't type it...On the electric...Well...

I can do about 60 now too (as long as we don't count the mistakes)... Very Happy
