In your testing with straight walls, have you ever tested them at 200 yards?

Here is a target shot at 200 yards with a 460 S&W Magnum with the group size measuring 1.5 inches. If I remember correctly, new brass was used.

I load for the 460 S&W Magnum in 2 ways. For my Encore, the bullets are seated fairly far out and they're not crimped. For my revolver, the bullets have to be seated deeper and crimped. In addition, for the revolver, new brass has to be resized AND crimped or the bullets move out of the cases during recoil.

I don't think I shot any loads at 200 yards with once fired brass but at 100 yards, my impression was that loads with new brass shot better than loads with once fired brass. That's why my 460 S&W Magnum handloads for South Africa were made with new brass.

The Klipspringer was taking from the top of a mountain at a range of about 180 yards with said load.

Grumulkin

Every gun has their quirk.

Yours might like new brass better than reused stuff.

All of mine definitely like the reused brass..
Lucky me, because I can reuse my brass and get better results with them.

Yours.. well your gun is definitely a great gun judging from that group at 200 yards..
but I'll say...
That gun must cost a hell lot to shoot well..

And .. thats a nice klipspringer!!
Congratulations

All my guns do better with used brass only because I'm a poor country boy and happen to have over 25,000 once fired brass in various calibers.

Yes...Nice Klipspringer.

At least I'm not the only poor country boy that has to make brass last.

Can I join this group of poor pensioners that have to keep their brass in as good a condition as possible and get maximum use from them. Very Happy Laughing

In all honesty I have never noticed a difference between new and used brass...but then again, that is most likely a reflection of my shooting ability as opposed to a difference between the brasses.

Grumulkin...I just noticed. I thought that was a "general use" avitar. But the hat in the avitar and what you are wearing has proven me wrong again this week. That IS you... Laughing

Now that we have established that each and every gun (and shooter) prefer different components...See how we digress.... Very Happy

Nice shooting though...I can do the same at 200 yards, but I have to use a scoped Browning .30-06. Cool

You like the hat? If you're nice to me, I'll tell you where to get one. It looks a bit funky but the fabric hanging down he back keeps the sun off my neck.

I use a lot of used brass. When I was in Alaska, I even picked up brass from the dump we sighted in our guns at. I haven't used new brass in my 44 Mags. for a long time; in fact I have 500 pieces of once fired brass I got cheap in my basement ready to process.

Understand, I'm not dissing once fired or 20 times fired brass I'm just saying that expecting to improve accuracy (or consistency if you prefer) by resizing or trimming new brass has never been found by me to be beneficial.

I have loaded my sons 257 Weatherby without doing any thing to the brass but, I had the trimmer out and checked the length of each case before loading. Weatherby brass is ready to load or at least the ones I have used. But for the price they charge they should cook me breakfast!

This thread has REALLY evolved.

In the case of a revlover-
Since the whole case is sized post fire-form, it may fit less snugly in the chamber than unfired brass (I aint measured yet but I'm gonna), but, it should get a better grip (pull weight) on the bullet than unfired brass.
Resized brass (certain types) may allow for more case expansion during pressure build up than new (guessing here)....how that affects pull weight and pressure curve, I don't know.

If all things were equal, recipe, crimp, the throats and chambers and it's indexing were exactly the same, I can't help wonder which would group better? New or reloaded cases of the same case lentgh?

This is all kind of theory/thinking out loud as my revolver is at the Smith and I've yet to do some testing so... my brian's running amok with vairables and I aint no Einstein. Hope I don't wear out the pistol finding the best recipe Very Happy

Aint reloading great? Laughing

Want to do some revolver and brass testing ???

After you develop your load.
Mark your chambers 1-6.
Shoot six 5 shot groups using the same chamber to shoot a group. (let gun cool down between groups)
Measure the group size and find center of group
When all is said and done I’ll betcha one of Vince’s beers that you end up with:
3 groups that have the same center POI and about the same group size.
2 groups will be a bigger with a slight change in POI.
1 group that your wondering if all 5 are there and no where close to the same POI.

Now that you’ll know what chamber is the best, get some more new brass and test your theories.
