My son just bought this. It has the "Mum" intact with a good bore. 6.5 Jap. He now wants to start reloading. Dad is very happy.

Elvis,
That is not a crack in the buttstock. These Japanes rifles had a two-piece stock that was glued together. I have several Type 38 and Model 99 Japanese rifles and all have the same stock arrangement. All the best...

Good one Mac. Now I'm cofusticated mate...what is the "MUM"?

That is the same as the old Lithgow Model 1 and Slazenger Model 12 .22 rimfire rifles Elvis. They also had a two piece stock. My Model 12 actually separated so I glued, screwed and pinned it to be sure.

The "Mum" is short for chrysanthenmum. This is the imperial Japanese ownership seal. The majority of these rifles have the seal ground off or otherwise obliterated.

All I know about the ariska 6.5 is it has the strongest action available.
Anything 6.5 is worthwhile.
Hope he enjoys it.

I have always heard that captured Japanese rifles had the chrysanthemum intact while the surrendered rifles had it ground off since it was a symbol of the emperor. Good find. Some of those old rifles shoot great. Remember that that safety is meant to be operated with the heel of your hand. Makes it a lot easier than trying to activate it with your fingers!!

I had a lot of fun with mine. I bought it when I turned 18 for $5. The only thing it ever killed was some jackrabbits but it was fun to shoot. ammo was hard to find for it back then so I ended up selling it.

Great find! I hope it gives him as much thrill as mine did me.

He already has a 6.5 Swede so bullets are same diameter. I ordered the press kit and the dies for his birthday. He lives in Alberta so powder and primers are not a problem. He only needs a compact solution for mounting the press as he lives in an apartment. Brass is available although somewhat pricey.

Here is an outlet that has brass for the 6.5 x 50mm JAP Mac. It cost 58c per case, but beggars can't be choosers mate...

Thanks Vince. Unfortunately it is illegal to ship brass out of the USA except to a US licensed importer. Thr brass I am looking at is PRVI @ $85 Can a 100.

Mac,
I have a dimensioned drawing for a "portable" reloading bench that is made of 2x4's and 1/2 or 3/4" plywood. I call it portable because it will fit through a 36" door easily.

Email me if you are interested. It is perfect for an apartment or a limited space.
The cabinet is an add on that can be built on to the bench.
